German free software projects in need of translation/localization
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 22, 2011
I'm trying to get my start in a translation career (German -> English), and, to make job searching easier (especially when going for in-house jobs, as opposed to freelance), am looking to do some volunteer work in the field to build up a portfolio that I can show to prospective employers.
Does anybody know of any German FOSS projects that are looking for volunteers help with translation/localization into English (either of the software's interface itself, or of the documentation)?
Building a translation platform from English to German.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 27, 2010
Hallo again today!
I have now a second post on the work I am doing. I am trying to complete a model for translating English texts into German.
My concept is a model using a text editor with only simple executable scripts being written to perform steps in the process.
I need to use a language for doing simple things like tagging words and translating using a dictionary I am building.
I am beginning to use AWK in conjunction with Bash and need to find some members with whom I can dialog on particular topics; even getting advice.
Are there any AWK users in the community, using the language for processing text?
I look forward to responses. Regards, patforkin.

Cron jobs not running on server (Ubuntu 11.10)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 22, 2012
I am having trouble with cron jobs not running on a VPS that I am renting running Ubuntu 11.10. I rented the server to run as a public server for my fork of the popular open source transport simulation game "Simurans" (my fork being Simutrans-Experimental). The cron job is intended to run a script every minute which checks to see whether the server is still running, and, if it has stopped, restart it. I have also added a test cron job to check whether the problem is with cron or with the server checking/restarting script, and that does not run, either.
I have edited my crontab file in the usual way ("crontab -e" at the command line) to contain what I am fairly sure after triple checking is the correct syntax for cron jobs (*/1 * * * * echo "TESTING" >> /var/log/simutrans/test.log in addition to the real command in similar syntax). The /var/log/simutrans/test.log file is never created. The real command points to /var/log/simutrans/check.log, which
wondering what IT jobs might be suitable for a ubuntu geek
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 23, 2008
I am curious what IT jobs might be suitable for a somewhat seasoned Ubuntu geek with some degree of job security for the future?
I have never worked in the IT field but given the fact that I spend so much time and effort working with computers, it seems the most logical thing for me to do is to seek a computer related job. I realize jobs are scarce these days, so anyone have any suggestions for jobs with perhaps maybe a little bit of long term job security ?

Start/stop upstart jobs without sudo?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 11, 2012
I've got an upstart script called /etc/init/app.conf that looks like this:
description "app server"
start on started mountall
stop on shutdown
# automatically respawn:
respawn limit 99 5
exec ./app >> /var/log/app.log 2>&1
exec /root/bin/hoptoad.sh "app has started"
Currently I have to use sudo to start and stop it, e.g. "sudo start app" or "sudo stop app" and whatnot.
Is it possible to enable select users or members of a specific group to start/stop jobs without sudo? I haven't yet figured out how to do that.
