File copy error from USB hard drive
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 27, 2008
I'm running Ubuntu and wiped my machine to do a fresh install of Hardy Heron. I've got everything up and running, except there is one file I cannot copy back onto my hard drive from my external USB drive. It's a VirtualBox hard drive image (.vdi) file that is about 16GB.
When I click on file properties it shows its correct size (and I know the original copy completed because I sat through it). But when I try to copy it back in the Nautilus file browser, it always comes up with this error at 2.0GB into the transfer:
Error while copying "Windows Vista.vdi"
There was an error copying the file into /home/username/.VirtualBox/VDI/WindowsVista.VDI
When I click show more details, it says
Error reading from file: Input/output error
I tried being clever and creating an archive file to transfer it over, but it would never complete creating the archive. I also tried creating an ISO file with KISO, but that showed that the vdi file was only 3.6 GB.
boot error from usb startup disk
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 26, 2010
I'm trying to boot from the usb startup disk I've just created. It pretends to load once I select it from the ReFit menu and says "boot error". I wonder why it won't boot (maverick)?

I then ran dpkg to isolate the error:

[SOLVED] missing repositories when trying to install/update packages, error from mintInstall
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 19, 2012
I recently tried to do some updates/installs and am getting some missing repository messages with a 404 error. Some googling pointed me to a different sources.list, but the ones I have tried end up giving me some 404 errors as well. Now mintInstall gives the following error on refresh:
"The data used by mintInstall is corrupted or out of date. Click on refresh to fix the problem : no element found: line 1, column 0"
Any assistance with getting an updated sources.list and fixing this error would be greatly appreciated.
ssh error from mwin / X server
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 24, 2004
Guys, I am having an odd problem on a F50 AIX 5.1 ML3
My id tools ssh'es every night out to the server to verify / sync userids. the last few days it failed every night. When I try ti ssh to the machine I get this error
ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host
I then have to go to the machine and either
restart mwin ( x needs to be lock for the app to work )
and sometimes if that fails I need to kill x and start it up...
After this ssh works great.
Any suggestions ?
"No response from server, restarting..." Error from LTSP Client
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 30, 2009
I have setup an LTSP Server from the 9.04 alternate CD. I boot a client from the network and it boots fine. I come to the gdm login screen and login with a user account, but it hangs with "Verifying password" for about 30 seconds, then goes to a "No response from server, restarting..." error. It restarts gdm and then brings the login screen back.
I am not sure what to do to fix it. Any suggestions? Thanks.
[SOLVED] LFS 7.3 / Chapter 6.10 / Page 96 / Error from the sanity check
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 15, 2013
This may or may not have something to do with my previous post:
When executing the command:
Bash: Avoiding .gvfs error from tar
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 22, 2009
I've Googled around for this and found lots of cases, at least one of which has been solved, but the solution is somehow evading me.
I'm trying to back up /home because I finally have a Live CD. The errors are always hidden by filenames, so I redirect stdout to a file to get it out of the way.
$ sudo tar -cvzf --exclude /home/chris/.gvfs ~/backup.tar.gz /home > /tmp/output
[sudo] password for chris:
tar: Removing leading `/' from member names
tar: /home/chris/.gvfs: Cannot stat: Permission denied
tar: /home/chris/backup.tar.gz: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: Removing leading `/' from hard link targets
tar: /home/chris/--exclude: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
$ sudo tar -cvzf - --exclude /home/chris/.gvfs ~/backup.tar.gz /home > /tmp/output
[stdout prints to the terminal; errors are lost.]
I built that command based on this.
Illegal Seek error from Motion
- date: May 1, 2004
I am trying to get Motion 3.0.7 running with a Dlink DCs900W wireless webcam. Running on Redhat 9.0 with kernel 2.4.20. I have modified my motion.conf to look at teh correct IP address. I get this error message and the program terminates with no other output. Any words of wisdom appreciated, thanks.
p.s. Yes, I am a NEWBIE and this is the first program I've tried to compile.
