MythTV VS. Apple TV VS. Vista Media Center
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 27, 2007
Any honest info in each of these? How do they compare? I played around with the Apple TV box yesterday at the store and it seems simple enough.
The one readymade MythTV box I have seen is much better spec than the Apple TV, but more expensive too. And is anyone actually selling Vista Media Center boxes?
Google TV VS Apple TV which one would you recommend?

I read that broadcasting companies tend to avoid Google TV because they do not get much profit out of letting Google TV have access to themselves.

Apple TV streaming to Ubuntu
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 4, 2011
I recently starting using Ubuntu, and pretty much fell in love.
I would love to completely dump Windows, but one things hold me back, my newly purchased Apple TV.
As far as I know, the only way to stream from my computer to apple tv is using iTunes with Home Sharing activated.
I tried installing iTunes via Wine, but it ran terribly (my mouse pointer disappeared whenever it was over iTunes, among other issues.)
Any advice, or programs, that can help?
Home fileserver setup for macs and sharing to apple tv?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 14, 2011
I've been having stability problems with my current setup, and I am trying to see if its worth fixing or perhaps I could use different software altogether. Here is what I have:
2 macbook pros backing up with time machine over the network
an apple tv 2 on which I am watching transcoded content (mostly with airplay)
Here is my current solution:
I have an older machine running Ubuntu 11.04. I have 2tb of storage equally divided into 3 partitions; one for each of 2 users' time machines and 1 shared. The shared partition is shared r/w using afpd and netatalk. It is also shared via samba read only. The problem is when I accidentally mount the shared media partition in finder on the mac, xbmc (which sees the samba partition) crashes. (xbmc is on the apple tv 2, it is jailbroken.)
I am also thinking of trying out sick beard, but I'd like to get what I have stable before I move on.
Any help would be appreciated.
Call for Apple TV developers & testers
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 10, 2008
Consider this a call for developers/testers in creating an AppleTV based XBMC distribution. I've svn commited atv-bootloader, it's still a work in progress but the basics of a kexec based appletv bootloader are present and working. It does not auto-boot (manual kexec'ing works) a secondary kernel yet and that's where I need some assistance in creating bash script tools to automatically locate and parse the default grub menu.lst. All code contributed must be GNU v2.
The AppleTV, with nvidia xvmc assist, can decode and display 1080i mpeg2 content without problem. This makes the AppleTV a great inexpensive ($200 refurb) HD capable frontend for mythtv.
One of the initial targets is a USB pen drive based MythBuntu. The idea here is to create a USB pen drive based distro that one can boot MythBuntu without have to alter the original internal hard drive. Stick the USB pen in, re-boot and boot into MythBuntu instead of the AppleTV OS. It will most likely require at least a 4GB pen drive.
Is there an API for retrieving the Apple TV's version?
location: linuxexchange.com - date: January 1, 1970
I just fired up the new Netflix app for iOS and upon trying to AirPlay the video to my Apple TV, I got this message:
So I was wondering how they're able to do this. Is there a public API that lets an app retrieve the version of the Apple TV that's selected for AirPlay? Or does Netflix use some other means to detect this?

Question: Apple iPad Or Android Tablet?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 5, 2011
Hi Guys, Long time no see,
I was thinking about getting either an "Apple iPad" or an Tablet running Google's "Android" Operating system to replace my laptop with for school as I use my laptop for school by taking notes down, doing school work and Projects on it and online research.
the reason Why I was considering this is because I wanted something lighter to carry around with me instead of a big bulky laptop on my desk when I could use something lighter.
If you say an Android Tablet, A recommended Tablet would be appericated, If you believe that I should stick to my laptop, feel free to give reasons.
Please vote on the poll, I will close it on the 12th of April.
Thank you for reading this and I hope to hear a response soon.
Apple vs Linux
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 19, 2011
Someone once told me that MAC is a distro of Linux or Unix.
If that is the case, how the heck did they get away with being able to charge for their OS and software? Isn't that against GPL?
Mark Shuttleworth vs Apple.
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 7, 2010
According to this article, In 2008 Shuttleworth thought that in 2 years Linux could surpass OS X.
Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth has big dreams for Linux. That shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's been following the progress of Ubuntu, which releases a major update every six months and keeps getting more and more user friendly. But user friendly is just the beginning. Shuttleworth wants Linux to be prettier too. In fact, he's calling on open source developers to make desktop Linux more attractive than OS X within 2 years.
So it's 2010 and we've been introduced to Ubuntu OS X.04. This feels like "Face Off" without the part where the hero gets his identity back.
Do you think Lucid Lynx looks better than OS X?
