[SOLVED] Ubuntu stuck at black login screen; problem with .X11unix file
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 1, 2012
I have an Acer Aspire One with the latest version of Ubuntu installed with the GNOME UI. Everything has been running fine on the computer until recently, when I hit a snag that I can't solve by myself.
I'm not sure what might have caused the error, other than a possible update glitch from Update Manager, as that is the last thing I did before I shut down the laptop when it was working last. The updates installed fine, but they might have bored the system somehow.
One day, out of the blue, I turned on my laptop and I was confronted with the black terminal login screen. After entering my credentials, I tried the "startx" command, but I received the following error, "/usr/.X11-unix has 7111 bad permissions," or something like that.
So I searched around online, and there were a few suggestions to use "chmod -7111 /usr/.X11-unix". So I used that, and then ran "startx" and I was able to boot into the GUI without a problem.

Plants vs Zombies black screen then closes
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 25, 2009
So first off, Plants vs Zombies is a bad *** game. That said, my issue, I checked in some other threads http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...plants+zombies is a devious one. After launching it goes to black full screen but never gets to the Popcap logo and after a few seconds, locks up. I can scroll through my open processes but can't even get into them. I have to reboot. It works in on my windows boot but I'd rather not even go there lol
Has anyone else had this issue?

10.04 LTS vs 10.10 almost made me go back to Windows.

Back in July I bought an Acer Aspire ONE KAV60 with Xubuntu installed on it. I used to run Linux a long time ago but had not messed with it for a couple of years and I was surprised to find out how much more "user friendly" Linux had gotten (With Ubuntu anyways). There are more and more GUI programs/processes now days which makes everything easier to do, however there are a couple of things that I have found in the last few months running Linux only on my little netbook.
When I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid and installed it from the Xubuntu, I was quite satisfied with the general desktop setup and ease of the operating system. I loved it, it was like going from OS/2 to Win95 all over again! (I'm not that old, I just started young).
Here recently, I ran into a little problem with 10.04 and had to re-format, but when I went to re-download it the new 10.10 was available instead. I threw it on a flash drive and installed it on my netbook only to have "problem af

[SOLVED] Black screen after booting Ubuntu 11.10 from USB
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 19, 2012
I'm trying to install ubuntu 11.10 x64 onto my laptop and replace windows. I saved the ubuntu 11.10 DVD iso to my fat32 USB stick and ran the Universal USB installer. I resarted my computer and hit esc then F9 to access the boot menu. From there I was able to boot from my USB. Next, a black menu screen with grey font appeared.
It had 5 or 6 different options to select from, including: Run ubuntu from usb; install ubuntu to hard disk; advanced options; and help. The first two options gave me the same issue. Everything appeared to be fine for about 5 seconds but after many strings of code had appeared on the screen, it flashed once and went completely black. However, I was surprised to hear "chimes" or something (seemingly implying some measure of success) only moments after the screen had gone black. Each time I was forced to restart because I had no idea what was going on with the screen black and all.
Here are my specs:

[SOLVED] Flash+Ubuntu 10.04 32bit+Firefox 4.x = No Go
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 16, 2010
So I've installed the flashplugin-nonfree package but for some reason flash refuses to work under Firefox. The libflashplayer.so is in the right folder and flash actually works under Chromium browser - just not Firefox.
I setup the system from a 10.04 32bit minimal CD could it just be a pakage I am missing that is causing flash not to work under Firefox? I've tried Firefox 3.6.x and 4.0 beta and flash fails in both.
Gnash/anything else of that nature is not installed on the system currently and there are no plugins listed under Firefox as installed -
Any ideas? As I said - the .so file is on the system and works under Chromium - I just much prefer firefox
