Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas + Wine 1.2 + Ubuntu 11.04
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 19, 2011
Hello. I have recently decided to change from Windows to Ubuntu, given that I will be able to run most of what Windows has to offer (via Wine) on Ubuntu. Even though I am still getting used to doing things via command line in Ubuntu, I think that it will be better than Windows in many ways...
I like gaming, and one of the problems I am currently having is that I cannot seem to get Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas to work properly with Wine and Ubuntu. I am still learning Ubuntu and where to find things, so please go easy on me! I have the retail copy of the game, but a no-CD patch for the "gta_sa.exe" file (it's easier, plus I read somewhere that it's better to run a cracked game with Wine). Every time I go to run Wine (even with the smallest programs) it gives me this message; "The program winemenubuilder.exe has encountered an error and needs to close." When I attempt to load gta_sa.exe, the game opens but the game window will remain black and I can't do anything. W

please explain hotel wifi access vs. net manager
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 8, 2009
I go to a hotel that offers "free wifi" Using that other platform,
wireless associates and authenticates. [Lets ignore the fact that the access point is not secured.] When I open a browser, I get a hotel-specific login page. It does not matter which browser. After login, the browser presents my usual home page.
Reboot! Now I select my favorite linux distro [that's currently Ubuntu].
Again, wifi associates and authenticates. Great! So I go to my browser.
This time nothing happens. I cannot ping the net either [I know a place that I know will respond to ping.]
QUESTION: Can someone tell me how to sort this out for next trip?
I have no idea what happens with the initial browser attempt. I guess that my port-80 connect request gets caught by some outbound port redirect. Things dance. The login dance completes. ... various handshakes happen given me access to the net ... My original request gets delibered to its target server. I suppose that the proxy rememers

Ok, now that I am fully converted over to Ubuntu - thank god - none of that Vista crap for me....
I have some Windows games that I know are NOT ported over to Linux...
So, I want to play Has anyone had any experience in getting any Windows games (non-linux ports) to work on Ubuntu? If so, can you point me in the right direction of where to start? Is there some sort of emu that you can use?
I am all ears!

You don't need things like the hunger for resources (be it rare materials or biomass) to find a reason why advanced civilizations will do interstellar travel. There is a much easier reason why they must travel between stars. Any civilization that handles the dangers of becoming extinct will at some point be forced to leave their own solar system: when their sun dies (unless they invented a technology that can rejuvenate stars).
