GRUB Error 17 when installing Ubuntu on an External Drive
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 15, 2005
This is my first time attempting to install Linux so I was sorta expecting something like this. I am completely new to this so bear with me.
I'm attempting to install to an external hard drive and got done with all of the installation up until GRUB. All seemed to go well until it had to reboot. Upon rebooting I hit F12, chose to boot from USB (the Ext. HD is USB connected) and got an Error 17 and it just died...
More specifically, it says:
Botting 'Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.12-9-386'
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0xde
Kernel /vmlinuz - 2.6.12-9-386 root=/dev/mapper/Ubuntu-root ro quiet splash
Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition
Press any Key to continue
Then it just dies.
Any help would be appreciated.
"Read Error" when installing to External Hard Drive...
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 26, 2011
Today I bought a Toshiba 500 gig external hard drive because the hdd in my laptop died. I was previously running the live version of Ubuntu from a 2 gig flash drive, and was finally able to get an external hard drive to install it permanently on.
I followed online instructions to install Ubuntu to an external hard drive, it goes through the entire process, and tells me to restart. After restarting and setting the bios to load from the external hard drive, I get "READ ERROR" and it goes no further.
I'm completely at a loss of what to do from here. I've ran the Boot Info script and the contents of that can be found below. Any help will be greatly appreciated...

How to avoid GRUB error 21 when I remove external hard drive
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 29, 2006
Hi, I have a laptop with Windows XP on the internal hard drive and Fedora Core 6 on an external hard drive. I use the Grub boot loader. It works great as long as the external hard drive is attached.
However, if the external hard drive is not connected then Grub gives Error 21. I understand that this is because Grub was expecting both hard drives to be available. I am looking for a way to allow booting Windows XP, when the external hard drive is not attached.
I tried this:
I booted off my Fedora Core 6 CD and did linux rescue.
I edited grub.conf by commenting out all the lines for booting fedora and all lines referring to (hd1,0) the external hard drive. I then edited device.map to comment out the line for (hd1).
Unfortunately, I would still get Error 21 if the external drive is not attached.
I appreciate any help. Thanks!
GRUB Error 21 when loading Ubuntu for first time
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 18, 2005
I've just tried installing Ubuntu but when it resterta for the first time, GRUB returns an Error 21. I know this means that it can't find the grub.conf file, but I don't know how to fix this. I used Windows XP's Recovery Console to get back into XP, but I can't access the GRUB files.
Here is my HDD layout:
1Gb IDE Boot Drive (FAT32)
8Gb SCSI drive
- 5Gb Windows XP Professional (FAT32)
- 3Gb Ubuntu (ext3)
I can't install GRUB in Windows, and I can't get the drivers for my SpeedTouch modem onto a Live CD, so I don't know what to do.

GRUB error 17. On a USB Pen Drive.

I installed #! (Yes, i know this is the ubuntu forum, but #! is Ubuntu based, so...) on my USB Pen drive. Live CD worked fine, USB didnt. I got Grub Error 17. I've been searching on other threads (so please dont tell me how great the search function is lol) and all i can find is changing the hard drives function to auto in BIOS, but i cant do this. There doesnt seem to be an option to do this.
PLEASE HELP! I cant boot into windows OR crunchbang. And i can only find options that you can use in windows. See? Catch 22. No getting into windows, no fixing it. No fixing it, no getting into windows.
Grub error 17 upon installing new HDD
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 14, 2011
I have just bought a new HDD and installed it in my Ubuntu server. The problem is that when I try to boot, I only receive the message "Grub error 17" and at that point the computer freezes.
In my troubleshooting I found that without the new drive, the computer starts and the hard drives are listed in BIOS as follows:
1. DVD-rom (ide) - Master
2. 80gb disk (with OS installed) (ide) - Master
3. 1tb disk (sata) - Master
In the new setup the disks are listed like this:
1. DVD-rom (ide) - Master
2. 80gb disk (with OS installed) (ide) - Slave
3. 1tb disk (sata) - Master
4. 2tb disk (sata) - Master
May this different listing in BIOS lead to the Grub error? What can I do to solve the problem?
Grub Error 21 when booting off usb drive
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 26, 2008
I am installing hardy herron from a usb key built to allow installing from the network. This key does exactly what it is supposed to do. I am also installing ubuntu 8.04 from the net onto a usb key. The install works flawlessly. The problem comes when I boot into the newly created usb drive. I get the dreaded grub error 21. In order to get the machine to boot I have to hit ctrl-alt-del and everything works nicely after that. I have been struggling to resolve this problem for over a year. Here is my system information:
fdisk -l yields the following information which I have edited for clarity:
/dev/sda1 boot=yes type=jfs
The drive /dev/sda1 is mounted on /
The file /boot/grub/device.map contains:
The /boot/grub/menu.lst contains:
## ## End Default Options ##
title Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-19-generic
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-19-generic root=UUID=33ca65
GRUB error 21 when trying to boot XP after installing Ubuntu 7.04 on seperate hdd
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 7, 2007
I'm a complete linux newbie and i think i messed up my laptop trying to install Ubuntu 7.04 from the live cd.
I reciently found my iRiver H320 so i decided to format it(as an external 20gb hdd) and install linux on it so i could play around with linux and see what it was like. i figured that installing it on this would not affect my windows xp install as it was on a seperate hdd and therefor would not touch my internal hdd.
I was wrong!!!!
After installing ubuntu on the external hdd i restarted my laptop. i changed the boot sequence so it would load from the external hdd......it said cannot load operating system(i'm presuming this is because my iRiver is set up as an mp3 player or something).
thats not the main problem tho.... i unplugged the external hdd and restarted my laptop, changing the boot sequence back to my internal hdd.
when it went to try boot it said
GRUB loading Stage 1.5
Grub loading, please wait....
it wont allow me press any buttons
ubuntu partitioning tool does not see external usb hard drive when installing ubuntu
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 29, 2006
My friend's usb hard is not showing up in the Ubuntu installer when I get to the part with the partitioner. If I do "sudo fdisk -l" the hard drive does not show, but "lsusb" does show it. How can I use the external usb hard drive? I will find out what the model number and who makes it is soon, but I won't know for a few days.
