Grub error 25! This is not on install but months after install
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 18, 2009
I have a grub error 25! I could not boot the system at all and while on the other computer after about 10 min i looked over here and the computer was booted to UBUNTU. I'm afraid to reboot in case it happens again.
This is a dual boot machine running a 100 gig hd with ubuntu on it and a 320 gig hd with windows xp on it. I read some articles on this but dont' understand how to fix it and for some reason I cannot find the Ubuntu install disk anymore. I could create one if i could boot to windows. The computer is a Dell Dimension .
Can anyone explain how to fix this without rebooting (again it's booted into Ubuntu) I guess I can chance a reboot but I need some info on what to do if it does not reboot correctly.
GRUB Error 25 after install..help!
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 27, 2008
I've just finished installing 8.04. Upon reboot, when GRUB is loading, I get an error 25.
I've installed a dual-boot setup - ubuntu on a separate drive (slave), while XP is on the master HD.
I have no idea what to do to fix this. Does anybody have any suggestions??

I had a grub error 25 earlier this week and was told to boot my machine using the liveCD so I made a new live CD for ubuntu 8.10 and was able to get the cd to work up to the options of how you want to use the CD. I chose the first option of using the CD without any changes so that I could copy the boot information to solve the grub error problem. Well, when I did that, I have the list of things it was doing and the last line reads as follows:
[ 0.512037 ] Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
I can't do anything with my machine now, not even turn it off using the button.
1)What does that line mean and
2)What do I need to do to fix this problem so that I can start working on the grub error 25 problem?
[SOLVED] Grub: Error 15 File not found, after updates in new 8.04 install
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 14, 2008
I installed 8.04 on some new hardware, as I built a new computer and wanted to transfer some of the files I had on the previous hardy install to this machine. I chose to have the new installation of hardy use the entire sda hard drive (see the output and following terminal outputs as a reference of how the drives are setup).
Here is a little information about the hardware I have connected to the machine. I have a total of 4 physical hard drives on this computer, one of which is only connected in order for me to transfer the data from an older installation of 8.04 I was using before my new build and will be removed after I sort out the problems I am having. 2 of the other drives installed will be eventually set up into a software raid 1 disk, that I can use as a long term data backup and storage drive when I have the time. Here is the output when I run sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 750.1 GB, 750156374016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 91201 cylinders
GRUB error 25 on usb ubuntu persistent install
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 15, 2008
I've been trying unsuccessfully to run Hardy on my usb drive as a Live USB with persistence. I followed the instructions >here<, except i used the Hardy .iso and changed all instances of "Gutsy Gibbon" to "Hardy Heron" in the menu.lst that was supplied. When I boot from the USB, I get to GRUB stage 1.5, and then get Error 25. I've tried a search, but none of the scenarios seemed to be the same. How do I fix this? Thanks!
GRUB Error 25: Disk Read Error

Hi. My system has WinXP installed and Fedora Core 3 also. Using grub to boot, I get Error 25 every time, no matter which of the grub menu choices I try to boot. I have four Linux kernals and one Windows OS as choices via grub. I have grub installed on a bootable CDROM, not in the MBR. I specified to put grub in the MBR when installindg core 3, but it appears to have ignored my request. If it indeed is there, it does nothing. Could be because it default boots to WinXp with a hiddenmenu (the default setup by intall). It doesn't recognize an <esc> keypress to bring up the hiddenmenu. I always boot straight to WinXP unless I use the grub CD I created. Bottom line: I don't really know if grub is in the MBR or not ... it doesn't work, and I'm using a CD (without hiddenmenu) instead.
I don't think there's anything wrong with my disk, as grub reports. I can boot just fine into Windows and access various partitions. I can also boot just fine into Linux, using a bootable CD
GRUB error 15 file not found

Hi, I just installed BackTrack 4 on my laptop, along with ubuntu 9.10. and XP Pro. the installtion of BT4 went fine, but when I went to boot into Ubuntu, it gave me error 15. file not found.
I can still boot into windows and BT4, but not 9.10.
I think this may be because the installer for BT4 is the same one used in ubuntu 8.10. How can I fix this?

Hi All, thanks for vewing my post. Appreciate Ubuntu created by lot of people working for free so appreciate any help you can spare.
Have a Dell Inspiron 4100 laptop. 1GB RAM and 1 Ghz processor.
Has a working install of Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.4
OEL uses Grub version 0.97
My OEL install works well and I do not want to make any changes to it such as upogarding GRUB to a later version etc.
I have installed Xubuntu mini and this completed without a problem.
I have a single hard drive.
I went into OEL and mounted the Xubuntu root drive so I could see the /boot/grub/menu.lst file.
I copied the entries for the main xbuntu kernel etc and pasted them into my OEL grub.conf.

Can't boot Ubuntu GRUB error 25
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 31, 2009
Please can someone help me recover from a GRUB error? I can't boot either normally or in recovery mode. All I can get is:
Error 25 disc read error
Press any key to continue
Pressing any key returns me to the GRUB menu, and then the same problem.
I'd had other problems with the system, which I don't think were related, but it was running fine yesterday and shut down normally without incident.
I need the computer for work, and would be really grateful if someone could help me sort this out. Thanks in advance.
