watching tv over network: mythtv+pulse or ivtvtune gui
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 27, 2011
Got a PC in the living room (HTPC) primarily for xbmc and also for running some games for the kids. Its running ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit). It also has a hauppauge PVR-500 analog tuner card which I dont use in the living room, as my tv provider has its own proprietary DTV box.
Upstairs in my study I occasionally want to watch (analogue) tv from my workstation or laptop over the network.
First I tried Myth TV. I just cant get it to work. At best I end up with distorted image and no audio. Launching mythtv-frontend locally on the HTPC, I get error messages about pulse audio running, and myth being unable to suspend it. Not that I want myth to suspend it, because XBMC and the kid games need to work. I googled around and found various solutions and workarounds, but none that work. I gave up after several days of trying.
Next I tried freevo. Long story short: doesnt work for me.
I tried something simpler, ssh-ing in to the htpc and running VLC over ssh. That actually works and sur
Wireless issue with Ubuntu 12.04 no GUI
location: linux.com - date: January 4, 2013
This is a user issue I believe (myself), here is the situation:
1st issue: To have linux in the boot process not look for a wired connection due to it being a laptop and it taking an extra 60 seconds every time I boot for it to search for a connection it doesn't have. Of course, once it boots, I have internet.
2nd issue: To be able to use and connect to wireless networks without my gui by the easiest possible means.
What's working: Ubuntu 12.04 has linux installed, and will boot in text mode instead of to the GUI just like I wanted, and I just use lightdm to start the GUI when wanted.
Now I want to say that I have been googling these issues and trying to find a solution, but have yet to find one that seems to fit my exact issue since most people are inside the GUI, which for my works perfect.
Appreciate any help guys, thanks.

Ubuntu Server 8.04 Installation with Ubuntu Desktop GUI. Possible?

I have installed Ubuntu Server 8.04. What are the packages I need to install to have the Ubuntu Desktop Edition GUI, without the Openoffice, Games and other desktop applications?
Successfully build kernel 3.4.2, but now, Ubuntu 12.04 GUI is extremely slow.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 15, 2012
I just successfully built kernel 3.4.2 and would like to play around with it. However, just right after I reboot Ubuntu 12.04 with the new kernel, GUIs become extremely slow. Even moving a prompt shell or a text editor window is unbearably slow.
Then, I doublechecked AMD Catalyst Control Centre (I'm using a AMD Radeon 8600 series video card). I happened to notice the Display Properties under Display Manager (
KVM on ubuntu: not suitable for GUI guests (or lazy sysadmins!)?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 11, 2009
I'm working on installing KVM on an ubuntu 8.04 desktop computer as an alternative to VirtualBox 3.0.x which is a little flaky in day-to-day work, but still usable. I guess I'm mostly just seeking out best-of-breed.
I was alarmed to read this on Ubuntu Community Documentation on KVM : The use case targeted when KVM was moved into main is "server virtualization". This means that even though KVM can be used to serve other purposes, it has been designed to be run on Ubuntu Server Edition to host non-graphical server operating systems. If you are looking for software to serve graphically-based virtual machines, VirtualBox, Parallels Workstation (or Parallels Desktop for Mac), or VMware Player/Server are more suitable alternatives.
If that information is correct, I would be better off sticking with VirtualBox 3.0.x which should (TM) be more stable as Sun nail the new version bugs.
Maybe I would be better off sticking with VirtualBox anyway. I'm finding it di
QEMU/KVM GUI = AQEMU segmentation fault on slackware64 13.0!

short story: AQEMU (the most excellent QEMU/KVM GUI which is @ version 0.7.3 alpha 2) is ALWAYS segfaulting on me! AQEMU requires that I configure the location of "emulators" = "QEMU/KVM binaries", I suspect is the proper name. NO MATTER WHAT, I always get this error when telling it where the "emulatores" are located. the error may be straight forward, but I dont know how to fix, or what to do... here is there error ::

GPG Error when using aptget update
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 27, 2012
I'm running a fresh install of Lubuntu 12.10 (wubi), and I keep encountering this error when trying to update:
$ sudo apt-get update
Get:1 http://archive.canonical.com quantal InRelease [3,954 B]
Get:2 http://archive.canonical.com quantal Release.gpg [3,954 B]
Get:3 http://archive.canonical.com quantal Release [3,954 B]
Ign http://archive.canonical.com quantal Release
E: GPG error: http://archive.canonical.com quantal Release: The following signatures were invalid: NODATA 1 NODATA 2
Please bear with me, as I don't exactly know a lot about package management/key signing, but does anyone know what steps I could take to fix this? Any help is appreciated.
