Automatically mount an EBS volume upon starting an Amazon EC2 Linux instance
location: linuxexchange.com - date: January 19, 2015
I have an EBS volume (e.g. /dev/sdf) that has been attached to an EC2 instance (which boots from a different EBS volume), and I have mounted the volume (through mount /dev/sdf /data). When I stop and start again the instance, the volume is still attached but no longer mounted, and I have to manually mount it again.
Is there a way to make the volume /dev/sdf automatically mounted to /data upon starting the instance?

JasperReports won't work on Amazon EC2 linux ami
location: linuxexchange.com - date: November 29, 2011
I have a web application on Amazon EC2 and JasperReports doesn't work like on my Windows PC... it comes out with
java.lang.Error: Probable fatal error:No fonts found.
I installed liberation-fonts as suggested by many on google, then I'm trying to set up this option for tomcat:
I added it to JAVA_OPTS (as CATALINA_OPTS was missing) in etc/tomcat6/tomcat6.conf, with no effect. Do you have any clues on this?
EC2 possible to run Windows on an EC2 Linux instance?
location: linuxexchange.com - date: February 6, 2010
If you are handling all your own licensing(working under a BizSpark license), is it possible run Windows on an EC2 instance marked for Linux/Unix?
I am considering migrating a dedicated server I have to EC2 but was not able to find guidance on this. I have been told that you get complete control over the instance to install whatever you like, but wanted to know if anyone else has tried this. Thanks for the info!
Replacing a dedicated virtual with 512MB memory and 10GB storage. Hosting mostly one-off sites and blog or three.

What tools do you use to upload files to amazon ec2 Linux instances?
location: linuxexchange.com - date: December 4, 2009
I am using the standard fedora AMI with the LAMP stack bundled and I want to upload files onto the server from my Windows desktop.
What is the "normal" approach for this? I am not a UNIX admin by any stretch, although I am more than comfortable with FTP and the basics of a BASH shell.
As far as I can see there is no FTP server installed by default on the remote virtual machine, and I am unable to open one up at my end because of firewall restrictions. I looked at WinSCP, but before I go to the lengths of installing and configuring that I wondered what the expected means of doing this might be. In any case I don't see how WinSCP or any other FTP based tool can work without the target machine listening, which implies something like and FTP server.
Is there anything like a Windows remote desktop connection?
I could mount an S3 elastic storage volume from within EC2, but it is a bit of a sledgehammer to crack my little nut of just wanting 100k of files copied up to the server.

looking for ways to profile python process that runs out of RAM on Amazon EC2 Ubuntu instance
location: linuxexchange.com - date: January 1, 1970
I am running a python process on an Amazon EC2 Ubuntu instance that processes a large data file. Initially everything is going fine and I do not notice any continuous rise in RAM or CPU usage. Then, after processing a part of the input data, the process runs out of memory and dies. dmesg -T produces the following, which does not tell me anything:
