Internet will not connect, and says no devices found?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 14, 2009
For the last few days I've been trying to get ubuntu 8.10 to work with my internet.
I have a Motorola SB5120 Modem with Comcast. I went threw all the sites and did everything to try to make it work but nothing.
Everytime I type in terminal : ifconfig all, it says "error fetching interface information : device not found" but when I had windows it was there and worked great.
I have all the right info and it says connected to eth0 but a site will never come up to anything but problem loading page, and auto search(auto eth0 or ifupdown(eth0)) always trys then says network disconnected.
Everything else works good about the Ubuntu system except that.
Is there something i'm doing wrong? Does anyone think they can solve this problem? If so, I would gladly appreciate it

Just installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and have no internet
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 24, 2014
I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 onto an old Dell Inspiron 1521. I am unable to access the internet either by wireless or plugging the ethernet cable from the modem to the laptop. When I installed Ubuntu, I had the laptop connected to my router with an ethernet cable and it said I had internet on the screen that says how much space you need and that you should be plugged into a power source. I'm thinking I need to install drivers but I'm not sure and don't know how to do that with Linux. First time using it.
Thank you

pretty sure i have some hdd problems. started when windows7 just wouldnt boot a few months ago. wiped it and installed ubuntu 11.10. had some weird stuff happen ended in me having to re/.install as wouldn-t boot past that ubuntu generic or ubuntu safey mode. was getting some inframs weird messages.
latest is that when it boots now i can only use touchpad - keyboard and mouse don't work. if i boot from livecd its fine. sometime try and access the hdd and it won-t let me mount it. gives me some message re> superblock. also seen stuff about I/O errors.
have done some reading and have read about some lines to put in terminal to give status - here-s some below. anyone any ideas?
[email protected]:~$ sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders, total 976773168 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

i can ping the router and the modem but i get no web pages, under ifconfig eth0 and lo are both up so it isn't hardware.
a friend of mine got it going at his place by changing the default gateway and dns, i tried that on my network, no dice, i tried editing /etc/network/interfaces which didn't work and i've tried live cds that have worked in the past.
i'm out of ideas and getting close to throwing it out of a window, please help

no valid session found after installing edubuntudesktop
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 4, 2011
I've had two workstations for over two years now running ubuntu and going through the progression of upgrades. These workstations are for my kids to use so I decided I wanted to install edubuntu-desktop. Before taking the leap, I cloned a VBox natty VM from my PC and installed edubuntu-desktop and all related packages. Everything went fine so I felt confident enough to go ahead and install the packages on my kids' workstations.
On the very first attempt everything installed without error, but on reboot, I was able to get the new splash screen and login screen, but on my attempt to login, I get a message box that says 'no valid session found'. I click the OK button and the message box goes away, but the PC doesn't do anything. I'm left with nothing but the wallpaper and no allowable interaction. I'm able to go to tty1 and when I checked the .xsession-errors file I see the following...
