How do I install software from a downloaded zip file?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 19, 2015
I usually install from the software center. If something in not in the software center and I download it from a web site, how do I install it. I did a google and all the instructions I saw seemed very complex. I know I did this years ago and it was not that complicated but now I can't remember what I did or find simple instructions.
How to create 3d volume from the 2d binary valued slices in Ubuntu 12.04
location: linuxexchange.com - date: November 6, 2014
I used "medcon" command to create 2d image slices from 3d image volume. Now after processing 2d slices I need to join these, in order to get a 3d volume. I think again the same command can be used but I'm not sure about the different options for this command.
Can anyone please help me in this?
How do I get input from an XBox 360 controller?
location: linuxexchange.com - date: September 24, 2014
I'm writing a program that needs to take input from an XBox 360 controller. The input will then be sent wirelessly to an RC Helicopter that I am building.
So far, I've learned that this can be done using either the XInput library from DirectX, or the Input framework in XNA.
I'm wondering if there are any other options available. The scope of my program is rather small, and having to install a large gaming library like DirectX or XNA seems like excessive. Further, I'd like the program to be cross platform and not Microsoft specific.
Is there a simple lightweight way I can grab the controller input with something like Python?
Edit to answer some comments:
The copter will have 6 total propellers, arranged in 3 co-axial pairs. Basically, it will be very similar to this, only it will cost about $1,000 rather than $15,000. It will use an Arduino for onboard processing, and Zigbee for wireless control.
The 360 controller was selected because it is well designed. It is very ergonom
How do I use factories from FactoryGirl in rails console

How do I prevent Eclipse from hanging on startup?
location: linuxexchange.com - date: January 19, 2011
I am using Eclipse 3.3 ("Europa"). Periodically, Eclipse takes an inordinately long time (perhaps forever) to start up. The only thing I can see in the Eclipse log is:
!ENTRY org.eclipse.core.resources 2 10035 2008-10-16 09:47:34.801
!MESSAGE The workspace exited with unsaved changes in the previous session; refreshing workspace to recover changes.
Googling reveals someone's suggestion that I remove the folder:
This does not appear to have helped.
Short of starting with a new workspace (something which I am not keen to do, as it takes me hours to set up all my projects again properly), is there a way to make Eclipse start up properly?
How do I intercept messages from a USB device on Linux?
location: linuxexchange.com - date: August 8, 2013
I have a popular drawing tablet that I connect to my PC with USB. Once connected, the tablet detects hand movements and manipulates the pointer accordingly. Somewhere, the tablet is transmitting this data to my computer.
My goal is to intercept these transmissions and manipulate the mouse after I process the data. The buzzwords I have found are: device drivers and HID, but I haven't been able to piece together much more than that.
Assuming this is possible, I have a few questions:
How is this done if the data format is known?
How is this done if the data format is unknown/proprietary?
My computer is running Ubuntu (but answers related to any form of a Linux OS are greatly appreciated!).
Note: This question is similar but intended for Windows.

How do I make server from laptop with broken video card?
location: linuxexchange.com - date: September 8, 2013
How do I install any kind of Operating System on a laptop with broken video card? I want it to run like a server. I could control it from another laptop. Is there a way to do so?
My laptop's video card is broken again and I need to re-purpose it. I'm not willing to pay again, because I have another laptop, but it would be nice to have extra laptop running to host some services.
Any other ideas?
How do I port forward from a remote server through a jump box
location: linuxexchange.com - date: February 16, 2015
I'm not sure if I'm using the right term of "port forwarding". What I want to do is connect to a local port that to connects to a remote server on a private network.
local --> jump-box --> server
On the server, a webserver is running on port 80
On local I would like to have my browser connect to localhost:8080 and reach the server's port 80.
The jump-box is a standard port 22 ssh server.
Is this possible?
