I am new to this forum and also very new to linux. I run a web radio station and recently had to acquire my own server. Since my administrator is no longer with us I have decided to take on the task of getting things set up. The problem i am having is i need to have a couple of ports opened up and not sure how to do this. is there a general way to open up ports? My server is running Fedora linux version 3. Please help. Thank you.
can't close my two open ports
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 27, 2008
I am new to linux security and have been doing some reading to fortify my linux box. Using nmap I found i have only two open ports of the 65535 ports i scanned. I want to disable them, but can't find them in the services list or even by using sysvconfig. The first service is H.323/Q.931. Some Googeling told me that this service is used for VOIP which I don't have a use for. How do I disable this service thereby closing this port?
The second service is iss-realsecure-sensor. I can't find much useful info on this service, and i can't find it listed anywhere for me to disable in sysvconfig. Can you tell me what this service is, and how to disable it if i so choose?
any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
How can I find out what ports are blocked by a firewall?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 2, 2008
Between my PC and the internet is a firewall which I have no access to. I think there may be more than one firewall.
Is there a tool/application I can use to see what ports are blocked by a firewall?

How do I set right click on gnome panel icon to close application in ubuntu 12.04 LTS
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 14, 2013
Hi, all. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS classic with no effects and I would like to be able to right click an icon on the panel to close an application without a menu popping up, also use scroll to minimise or restore. I've been using tint2 in debian up until now and wonder if the same is possible in Ubuntu without installing tint2?

How to monitor the USB ports of an old IBM T41?
location: linux.com - date: September 14, 2010
Besides my Macbook I got this old IBM T41 with Ubuntu 10.04 installed on it.
Currently, I'm working on developing a device driver for Ubuntu that'll monitor the USB ports of the computer, and report when a device has either been inserted or removed from either of the ports.
I have entirely read this tutorial: http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/drivers_linux?page=0%2C0, but that's about as much experience I got with device drivers. - I'm not completely new to working in this ring level though, as I have already developed my own little GUI toy OS.

Hi! I just want to know how can I close a file from the terminal. I open it with gnome-open and want to close from there also... there is a way to do that?
And can I see and close processes from the terminal? (Linux has "processes", right? Like those from ctrl+alt+del in windows?). Yes, absolute begginer =]
