[SOLVED] How to create custom app launcher with Fedora 16 gnome3?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 13, 2012
Hi. I have tried many times but I can't for the life of me figure out how to create a custom launcher for the shortcuts menu. It's easy to do that with stuff already in the regular menu but is apparently (to me) impossible with something that's not. Thanks ahead of time.
how to execute browser app Flock.0.7.6.en.us.i686 on FC1 kernel 18.104.22.1689.nptl?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 5, 2006
I have been trying for a couple days now (intermittently) to install a browser called Flock v.0.7.6.en.us.i686, a development of Mozilla.
(Hmm, would that be for x86 64 architectures? I hope not, i thought just for 4th gen. processors?)
I am running Fedora Core 1 "Publisher's Edition" (Came with an O'Reiley Linux book at the public library, (c) 2004).
My kernel is 2.4.22-1.2199.nptl.
AMD Athalon XP 3000+ machine with 512 MB RAM.
As may be evident from my use of internet, Mozilla itself is working ok. Flock, however...
I succeeded at gunzipping flock and de-tarballing it. It now resides in a folder (directory) also of name Flock in my home shell (not root) directory. But I cannot seem to get it to run.
I tried to compile the folder with ./compile.

How to launch an app in terminal, & keep it running after I close terminal?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 1, 2005
I like terminal, but sometimes I need to use Nautilus to launch, e.g., PDF viewer.
Then I usually close Nautilus and go on watching PDF.
I want to do the same from within terminal.
Is there a way to launch an app from terminal, and keep it running after I close the terminal?
(I'm not asking of "&" suffix)
How to measure GUI app startup with time(1)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 12, 2010
I want to measure the startup time of any GUI app (e.g. firefox) using the time(1) command. However, timing is measured until the app is closed, which has to be done manually by exiting it or clicking X.
How can I get the app to load, terminate immediately and give me the startup time?
How to insert characters by ascii code?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 28, 2003
Is it possible to insert characters on the command line or in vi by ascii code?
I badly need it, since I cannot enter some important characters from the keyboard when i login with ssh into a remote site. (That site uses a localised charset) It is peculiar that presently I have to concatenate files on the system just because the other file contains the character I need, and once the character is in the right file, I can somehow copy it in the right places inside the file.
How to send characters on to the active window using X Window?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 24, 2009
I want to design a software which converts english to local Indian languages like Hindi, Tamil etc. I want to capture the key strokes of the user, convert it from english to appropriate language and send it to the current active window. I am able to capture the key presses using the input device event interface. Now I need to send it on to the current active window. I know that display is managed by the X Window system. How to send the characters on to the active window?

How to know some app's console command in unity dash?
location: linuxexchange.com - date: October 15, 2013
Is it possible to see some app's console command from unity dash menu?
For example, I open the Dash via the windows key, type in some app name, it appears in the list below, and I do "something" to see how to start it from the command line.
I am asking this because I came across multiple 3rd party apps whose console command has nothing with the app name, and I was unable to figure out how to open such apps from the console.
