Find the serial number of a laptop with its old hard drive
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 1, 2013
Well, my problem is that I lost my laptop on a public bus and I am having no luck finding it at the bus depots lost and found. I've contacted the police and they said they can enter it into the National Crime Information Center database which is used by pawn shops and police departments to cross reference serial numbers of items recovered. Problem is, I threw away the packaging and don't know what my serial number was. I've already sent an e-mail to the manufacturer I bought it from to see if they happened to have kept the serial number associated with my laptop purchase and I'm waiting for a reply. What I still have from the laptop is its power charger and its original hard drive.
A month after purchasing the laptop I replaced its original hard drive with a 120 gb SSD. I put the original hard drive in an external enclosure and didn't bother wiping the windows 7 installation. I've just been using it as backup storage and other than uploading newly downloaded media files into i

How can I get Ubuntu to show the serial number of a drive?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 9, 2011
Wiping hard drives (SATA and IDE) is part of my job. Most of the time we use DBAN (http://www.dban.org/). What's nice about DBAN 2.2.6 is that it lists the serial number of the drive(s) upon finishing whether successful or failed. This is necessary in my office, because every wipe must be confirmed and signed off on by a witness other than myself. They can check the serial number listed by DBAN against the one on the physical drive to acheive absolute assurance that the drive plugged in is the one that was just been wiped (or failed to wipe). Recently we've been exploring the idea of using either Knoppix or Ubuntu to wipe drives. I use "shred -vfz -n 7" to replicate DBAN's DOD standard wipe. What can I use in the Linux terminal to list the serial number of the drive that's just been wiped?

How to find CPU Speed on SuSE systems

Anyone know how can I find CPU Speed on a SuSE system?
I tried cat /proc/cpuinfo and I got this output:
vendor_id : IBM/S390

bogomips per cpu: 1179.64
processor 0: version = xx, identification = xxxxxx, machine = 2064
processor 1: version = xx, identification = xxxxxx, machine = 2064

processor 3: version = xx, identification = xxxxxx, machine = 2064
processor 4: version = xx, identification = xxxxxx, machine = 2064
Are any of those numbers the CPU Speed in MHz, for example?
How Do I Get My PC Serial Number?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 12, 2012
All the lables on the bottom of my Toshiba Satellite Laptom hav smeared
and smudged so much that I can't make out any information on them. I
found my model number here on these forums because I used it in some
early-on posts about trying to get my wireless going under Ubuntu (the
wireless adapter turns out to be USB connnected internally).
What I am looking for now is some way to get the serial number either off
the laptop directly, or with the help of some software. I run Windows
2000 as a client on this PC with the help of Oracle's VirtualBox VM (a
great product I may add), so either a method of getting the serial number
via Ubuntu or Windows would do. I intend to keep a file on hand against
any future needs that has all this info in it, but I have to get the info
Any help would be appreciated.
Oh, the laptop came originally with a 250 GB hard drive. I bought a WD
750 GB drive and put it in instead. Great fit, and I love the added
storage. I noted in
