I can't defragment my NTFS drive
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 15, 2006
I can't seem to be ale to defragment my NTFS partition with Windows Disk Defragmenter. When I try, it sticks at 1%, even after an hour of waiting. I had resized the partition using GParted earlier, but did not defragment it prior to resizing mainly both because I found out that this was recommended after I had resized the partition and because I resized the partition just after setting up the computer for the first time on Windows XP and I assumed that the drive was defragmented by the OEM before shipment. I think this might be a consequence of me not defragmenting the partition prior to resizing it. If it is, is there any way I can fix it without reformatting? If a reformat is necessary, can I use a disk cloning program to back up and them restore the files on the partition?
Also, the partition is about 80 GB, so is it possible that I just haven't waited long enough?
Gparted not partioninig my ntfs drive
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 17, 2009
I am running XP home and Ubuntu 9.04 on dual boot but of course, when I was installing ubuntu, I set aside way too littlle room, now I am out of room on my ubuntu partition. I used gparted to try to expand my partition, used live CD and everything, unmounted all drives, freed up space on my ntfs drive and expanded my ubuntu partion, it checks it as alright but when going to perform the actual partioning and resizing, it stops and gives an error message instead.
I am including the saved error file. Any help on how to get around this would be greatly appreciated. As it stands, I cant do anything. BTW, I am using a Dell Inspiron 1300 with XP home on the ntfs drive.

Can Linux turn my ancient PC into a networked NTFS drive?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 24, 2005
I have an old Dell Optiplex that's 200Mhz w/ 32M RAM, a 145W power supply which only has mobo, floppy & 2 HDD outs. I've got a HDD in the 1 HDD bracket the unit came with, and I modded the floppy bracket to make the other fit. Then I robbed the power cable from the CD-ROM to run the second HDD.
I want to use it's 2 IDE channels over our home network to access 2 more HDD's.
The drives I want to put in the old PC use NTFS (sorry, I'm lost in Linux).
I don't have a CD burner, so installation's real tough for me.
I'm pretty good in Windows, except maybe for apache & php stuff.
My experience in Linux hasn't been good yet- I don't suspect it will until I get a burner.
A year or so ago I tried Suse installing over FTP, and I tried learning Linux on that, but gave up after a week or so because it took a couple days to figure out how to do something that'd take me 5 mins in xp (install seti).
So far I've found a few live-floppys, and they're useless to me because they're just c

Cant share NTFS drive as readonly via NFS in natty
- date: May 28, 2011
Well, yesterday i decided to try out NFS, which absolutely went beyond expectation for speed and reliability. Just today i decided i would upgrade to natty, then i tried to mount a directory thats on the NTFS drive via NFS over my network and all of a sudden it just refuses to work.
(i have sudo'd using the correct password)
i am now prompted with:
:~$ sudo mount 192.168.0.2:/media/Secondary/Media/Movies /test
[sudo] password for user:
mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting 192.168.0.2:/media/Secondary/Media/Movies
this is my exports file:
# /etc/exports: the access control list for filesystems which may be exported
# to NFS clients. See exports(5).
# Example for NFSv2 and NFSv3:
# /srv/homes hostname1(rw,sync,no_subtree_check) hostname2(ro,sync,no_subtree_check)
# Example for NFSv4:
# /srv/nfs4 gss/krb5i(rw,sync,fsid=0,crossmnt,no_subtree_check)
# /srv/nfs4/homes gss/krb5i(rw,sync,no_subtree_check)
cant access second hard drive with apache on my Ubuntu 14.04 server
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 23, 2014
I installed a 3TB storage drive on my Ubuntu 14.04 as im using this as a media server and serving some large files I ran out of space I have mounted it at /media/root/"uuid"/ the issue im having is its restricted access I get the "You don't have permission to access / on this server" msg I have tried to change permissions but this seems to have no effect I think because you cant give public permissions to the media folder.
Q should this be mounted in a diff way or spot for this?
I simply need to server web pages from the /var/www/ of the second storage drive please let me know what you think or if you want more info

[SOLVED] Upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.04 crashed now I cant backup my files
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 6, 2010
I was running Ubuntu 9.10. It was great, I loved it. Update manager said there was an upgrade available to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04. (This is the first time I have ever said Yes, install upgrade. I usually do a backup and install a fresh copy of the newer version.) Anyway the upgrade installed and reported an x-server error but the rest looked OK. After reboot---thats it, nothing after reboot. Just sits at a Ubuntu page like it wants to load but it will not. I could handle this if only I had made a backup first. (I should have known better.)I have another PC running Ubuntu 9.10 so I took the hard drive from the failed upgrade and I have it hooked up to my SATA drive adapter and the USB side into my other Ubuntu PC. So now I can see the folders on the failed upgrade disc. (great.) Thats all I need are the files that are in "Documents" folder. I assume "Documents" is in my "root" folder. The "root" folder has an X symbol on the top right corner and
