.bashprofile not being executed instead of .profile
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 12, 2013
My ~/.bash_profile reads,
And ~/.profile reads,
After logging in graphically, 'echo bar' is two but 'echo foo' is nothing. So it doesn't appear that my .bash_profile is being read. Ideas why?
Even without the source command in ~/.bash_profile, foo still isn't set and bar is.
Special user, .bashrc not being executed upon login
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 24, 2011
I have started using the PostgreSQL database server. It created a special user, postgres, when I installed the package. Except for one little thing, it is working great.
When I "su - postgres" or "su -l postgres" (which should be equivalent), the .bashrc I created in user postgres's home directory is not being executed. If, after login, I run ". ./.bashrc", the profile is executed and does exactly what I want, which is just setting a couple of environment variables. I have verified that the user's shell is bash and that the .bashrc profile is in its home directory, owned by user postgres.
I even tried making the file executable, but that did not help.
I have read the man pages for both su and bash, and both seem to indicate that the profile should be being executed. What am I missing?
.bashrc not being executed, why?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 20, 2003
.bashrc is not being executed after starting a new xterm or even after logging out and in.
-rwxr--r-- 1 testuser_en users 101 2003-12-19 20:32 /home/testuser_en/.bashrc
Actually, I have set some locale variable in .bashrc which is not correctly set after logging out and in..
Strange thing is when I put that stuff in .bash_profile it works smoothly but not in .bashrc., why?
can anybody give a hint?
Appletouch not being recognized as Synaptics
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 27, 2011
Hi, I'm trying to change some of the config options for my MacbookPro3,1 touchpad. I added the relevant lines in my Xorg.conf file but I'm getting an error that no synaptics touchpad is recognized and then the module is unloaded. This is the error:
[ 2040.578] (**) Option "MaxSpeed" "1"
[ 2040.578] (**) Option "AccelFactor" "0.02"
[ 2040.598] (EE) Query no Synaptics: 6003C8
[ 2040.598] (--) Synaptics Touchpad: no supported touchpad found

[ 2040.600] (II) UnloadModule: "synaptics"

I know it's an appletouch and not a Synaptics trackpad but on the appletouch driver site it says I should be able to configure it using the synaptics driver: http://www.popies.net/atp/
Here's my xorg.conf file in case this helps at all. I cop
Execute Script as another user whilst not being root
location: linuxexchange.com - date: May 5, 2015
I'd like to execute a shellscript directly from a web-gui. The shellscript belongs to the user "tux".
Since my webserver is running as apache, I can't execute tux's shellscript.
What I've tried:
su -c "/opt/tomcat/bin/shutdown.sh" -s /bin/sh tux
I tried different ways, the mentioned one is how it worked when i was logged in as root user.
Is there a way to do the same while not being root? Something like a command where I can pass the user AND its password to execute the script.
I can't just change the ownership of the script because it's depending on tux's profile (other files, directories).
Thanks very very much in advance for your help!
edit: I had to edit the example since it was the wrong one.
[SOLVED] Bejeweled 2 Deluxe CD being recognized as an audio CD???
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 1, 2008
This doesn't exactly belong in Wine but I don't really know where else to put it. If the mods know a better section, please move it.
I'm in the process of migrating my mother to Ubuntu from Vista. There are three programs she wants:
-Internet Explorer (Firefox+Vista-Aero theme is good enough)
-Spider Solitaire (Aisleriot or whatever it's called has it)
-Bejeweled 2 Deluxe
The computer is dual-booting and Bejweled works flawlessly in Vista. However, when I insert the B2D CD in the drive, Ubuntu opens Rythmbox and starts playing the soundtracks. The reason for this, I suspect, is that the installation CD is also a normal audio CD that can be played in a normal CD player. When I browse the CD in nautilus, all I see are the audio files. So as far as Ubuntu is concerned, I inserted an audio CD in the drive.
How can I install this game in Wine for my mother? Should I mount the Vista partition and copy the installed game from Program Files?
My mother's tried others like Jools

libx264 not being detected
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 22, 2012
Hello encoders =)
Right now I'm trying to set my encoding software on ubuntu (11.04) and am having problems with x264.
I got x264 last version from git and its configure gave me this:
filters: resize crop select_every
bit depth: 8
chroma format: all
You can run 'make' or 'make fprofiled' now.
After compiling and installing I get this from "x264 --version":
x264 0.120.2164 da19765
built on Feb 21 2012, gcc: 4.5.2
configuration: --bit-depth=8 --chroma-format=all
x264 license: GPL version 2 or later
PHP errors not being logged on localhost
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 15, 2013
It seems as though my error log under /var/log/apache2/error.log is not picking up any errors from my local webserver. I've checked through my php.ini file and it's configured as follows:
error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_DEPRECATED
display_errors = on
display_startup_errors = Off
log_errors = On
log_errors_max_len = 1024
ignore_repeated_errors = Off
ignore_repeated_source = Off
report_memleaks = On
track_errors = on
html_errors = on
I'll add in a stray bracket on a php file, bring down the whole site but the error log says nothing. Other than the following:
