Help: trying to install Ubuntu on Intel Mac OS X 10.4
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 22, 2013
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04.2-desktop-i386 on an Intel Mac Mini with OS X 10.4. I've used Unetbootin to create a bootable USB of Ubuntu, but when I select Linux (rather than OS X) the screen goes black and I get a terminal reading that says BOOT ERROR. Total noob, no idea what to do, haven't been able to Google specific-enough instructions to figure this out. Help would be super-appreciated.

Install Ubuntu on External Hard Drive
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 29, 2012
This is my first experience with anything Ubuntu and Linux.
I have a 60 gb external hard drive that is attached to my Windows 7 (Home Premium SP1 64 bit) via USB 2.0.
I would like to install Ubuntu to this external hard drive somehow so I can install programs in Ubuntu, save files and have them remain, etc. I would like that hard drive to be bootable, so I can choose to run Win 7 or Ubuntu when I start up. If possible, I would also like to be able to run Ubuntu off that hard drive inside a virtual machine so I can have programs open in Ubuntu and Windows 7 simultaneously.
A step-by-step of how to do this would be great... Thank you so much!

Getting Ubuntu 7.10 to Booton External USB drive on an intel iMac
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 20, 2007
Up till now I've always run Ubuntu in a virtual machine. The reason I want to be able to boot from a USB drive, is so that I can use accelerated graphics in compiz, which required the ATI drivers that don't work in Vmware fusion or using the Ubuntu 7.10 LiveDVD.
I have an iMac Core Duo with OS X taking up the entire internal HD. I installed Gutsy on an external USB drive using the LiveDVD. In the installer selected the option to use the entire Disk. then I used gparted to check the partition table. I got the following partitions.
/dev/sdb1 ext3
/dev/sdb2 extended
/dev/sdb5 swap
while still in gparted,I set I set the boot flag on /dev/sdb1
When I rebooted holding the option key, my internal hard disk was the only disk that showed up in the bootloader.
One thought i had was to use a cd as a bootloader. If so where would I get such a cd (iMacs have EFI instead of BIOS, so the disk would have to be compatible) or what would be directions for creating it. (I'm not much

newbie how to install ubuntu 14 on late 2013 macbook pro external hard drive
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 11, 2014
Hi,
I have a live USB setup (downloaded a few days ago, so very recent) and can boot into "Try Ubuntu" from my mac.
But I now want to install ubuntu on external usb hard drive.
After booting up on my Live usb, I went through the process of installing Ubuntu on the external drive. Completed apparently successfully.
When I boot up my mac with holding down the option key, the EFI boot option appears, but when I choose it, I get a grey circle crossed-out on the screen and it doesn't boot.
I tried the same thing using a USB stick (32G) with the same result.
Any ideas?

choose the selection that represents your usb's partition
select the change button
click format and select one of the exts from the upper dropdown
select / from the lower dropdown
