Install Ubuntu from slave hard drive
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 8, 2012
Hello,
I have been reading around for a few hours now and I'm kinda coming up short.
Here's my problem.. A friend asked me to help him with his PC, it appears kinda old, an HP Pavillion 4550Z using windows 98. It was trashed I tried everything and nothing worked so the only option was to wipe it out and start over, except I do not have an operating system.
I have Ubuntu on a flash drive but his BIOS does not appear to allow booting from USB.
I was hoping for a way to put the Ubuntu install onto a slave hard drive and boot from it to install onto the master drive. (slave drive would act like the CD)
Can anyone point me in a direction to do that? I am using windows XP.
Thanks in advance.

location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 19, 2011
Hi,
I am curious to dual boot Ubuntu 11.10 on my Win 7(H P)Computer. However i learnt that there is more than one way to dual boot like Wubi,Vmware, burnt DVD etc..I already have a separate drive partitioned for Linux(F in Windows Environment. So
i)Which option should i go with ?
ii)Is it possible to view contents of other drive(C:,D: etc) from Linux environment ?
iii)I read in a blog that While using Wubi,it only installs Ubuntu 7.x.Is it true?

How to remove Windows 8 entirely and install Ubuntu 12.10 solely.
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 22, 2013
I have a Windows 8 laptop and I first created a Ubuntu 12.10 DVD to test it out. I liked it so much that I installed it alongside Windows 8. Can someone help me with how I can basically remove Windows 8 entirely and leave Ubuntu 12.10 running solely on the laptop? Do I have to reinstalled Ubuntu 12.10 or is there another way? Thanks!
No unity after fresh install. Ubuntu 12.10, Nvidia Geforce 295 GTX.

So I just installed Ubuntu, updated and installed nvidia-current on my computer but it won't show me a propper desktop on booting.
Visible symptoms:
Missing unity dash Missing window frames Limited resolution options Starting nvidia-settings it tells me I'm not using the xorg-config. Nvidia-settings only shows me a very limited set of options. Running nvidia-xconf replaces the xorg-config but it seems to be ignored by the system as nothing changes on reboot.
I've tried updating to the latest nvidia-drivers found in the xorg-edgers ppa with no effect.
I'd very much appreciate it if someone could shine some light on what the issue might be and whether or not it's likely to be fixable.
How to install Ubuntu 7.10 Server on MS Virtual Server 2005 R2
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 28, 2008
I'm a newbie and I tried this once and Google ate my question.
I am trying to install Ubuntu 7.10 Server on a Virtual Machine created in MS Virtual Server 2005 R2. The box this will run on has an Intel Core 2 Dual Processor and 4 gb of memory. I have partioned the hard drive so that the Virtual Machine for Ubuntu is separated from the Windows Small Business Server stuff.
I am doing this so that my laptop can stay connect to the network whether I am working on Ubuntu LAMP or SQL Server 2005.
The Virtual Server installed fine as did the Virtual Machine until I tried to add the Ubuntu Server. The error I get comes after I've done the keyboard selection and states: "Cannont mount CD-ROM". My only option is to abort.
Can anyone out there help an ole tired run down bitch (as in dog) ? I have searched high and low over hill and dale throughout just about every forum I could find. There is alot on Desktop and VPC but nothing on Server stuff.
Sorry if there are sp
GRUB Error 17 when installing Ubuntu on an External Drive
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 15, 2005
Hi,
This is my first time attempting to install Linux so I was sorta expecting something like this. I am completely new to this so bear with me.
I'm attempting to install to an external hard drive and got done with all of the installation up until GRUB. All seemed to go well until it had to reboot. Upon rebooting I hit F12, chose to boot from USB (the Ext. HD is USB connected) and got an Error 17 and it just died...
More specifically, it says:
Botting 'Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.12-9-386'
root (hd1,0)
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0xde
Kernel /vmlinuz - 2.6.12-9-386 root=/dev/mapper/Ubuntu-root ro quiet splash
Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition
Press any Key to continue
Then it just dies.
Any help would be appreciated.

So, i got a Macbook pro8,1 and i would very much like to have a dual boot system on it.
I prefer the USB Media installation method, and as it's the only option i have at the moments.

sudo dd if=/Users/sary/Desktop/ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64+mac.img of=/dev/rdisk2 bs=1m
This is my setup :

Formatted the usb in " Disk Utility " :
Selected '1 Partition' and 'MacOS Extended (Journaled)' .
Partitioned the usb as :
GUID Partition Table (GPT)
The ISO img used :
the Ubuntu 12.10 amd64+mac version " ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64+mac.img " .
after a shutdown, Refind shows up and it's working properly, But when i select the USB Media drive it leads to a black scree
no display after install ubuntu minimal 10.10 with gnomecore
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 13, 2011
Hello,
I recently installed the newest ubuntu 10.10 minimal and only installed the base package. Afterwards I booted to command prompt and installed xorg, gnome-core, firefox, and wine. I've done this many times before (never with ubuntu 10.10) and have never had a problem. This time though after installing the packages mentioned about and typing startx it goes to a blank screen and it looks as though my monitor is in standby mode.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!!!
