location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 22, 2012

Legacy mode go to UEFI?
What type of partition ext4 or ext3

2. Download Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit version and create start up media (either CD, USB etc...)

4. Use Gparted to create two partitions one for mount / and the other for swap

Can't install Ubuntu 11.10 Server linuxheadersserver dependency issue?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 20, 2011
Hi,
I'm attempting to install Ubuntu 11.10 Server (AMD64) on a VMWare ESXi virtual machine.
When I get to the installing packages stage, it errors out:
Code:
Installation Step Failed
An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Select and install software.
I've checked the CD-ROM, Ubuntu reports it as a valid CD-ROM.
If I look at /var/log/syslog, I see:
Code:

[SOLVED]Can't Install ubuntu 11.10 : Input/output error
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 5, 2012
SOLVED: it was a problem in the ram memory module. I recommend the ultibateboot cd for tests
This is a known problem but i couldn't fix with what I've found on web.
Task and error:
Install ubuntu 11.10 on an empty HDD.I get a Errno5(input/output error) always on the same stage (around 30%). The systemn suggestion is about burning the CD in low speed(but in this case is a flash drive) and checking the HDD for errors.A single time, instead of the error above, I got a 'the following file didn't match its source copy on the cd/dvd - target/usr/lib/cups/filler/hpcups" then another one ofr another file, the finally errno5

install ubuntu alternate from usb drive /cdrom mount problem
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 16, 2008
I have been trying to install 8.04 alternate w/ a usb drive.
I followed the instructions under the "manual" section here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...n/FromUSBStick
This is what I did:
Use gparted to format 720 mb fat16 partition on usb thumb drive and set flags to boot
Code:
sudo aptitude install mtools syslinux
Code:
sudo fdisk -l
this tells me my usb thumb drive is /dev/sdb1
it is already automatically mounting to /media/disk-1
so I type:
HTML Code:
syslinux -s /dev/sdb1
the hidden file ldlinux.sys pops up on the usb drive just like its supposed to
I then right click the ubuntu 8.04 alternate .iso and extract contents to a folder on my harddrive. I then drag all contents (hidden also) to the thumb drive.
Next I rename the isolinux folder to syslinux and the isolinux.cfg file in the isolinux folder to syslinux.cfg
I am using syslinux Version: 2:3.53-1ubuntu2
I then take the usb drive and set the bios to boot
Guide: How to Install Ubuntu 12.10 with newer Nvidia cards
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 14, 2012
THE ZITE WAY
I am posting this because I want to share my way of installing Ubuntu 12.10 x64 with a newer Nvidia card. The problem happens on install with 12.04 and 12.10 x64. The problems with nouveau drivers that prevent progress to an install screen or really to do anything. They just don't seem to work well with the newer cards. I always used an alternate install CD but that is no longer an option. This is a step by step guide how to install Ubuntu 12.10 x64 with a new Nvidia card with out any kind of rigging to get it to work (installing on another computer transferring hard drive or installing with another video card) NOTE: I have no clue if this works with 32bit or that this is even a problem. I found out this way of doing it by finding so many different post across the internet, about 30 installs, and just blind luck. I have this process down in my head and I have done it about 10 times so far with it always turning out the same way. I also can't be much help as I don'

Ok, so I know what your thinking, "why cant people just google and find out about nomodeset?", right?
Well I did find out about nomodeset, but I'm not sure I'm using it correctly.
I'm trying to install ubuntu from a USB drive created with LiLi (Linux Live USB Creator), but when I boot from my USB drive I get a black and white screen which say "GNU GRUB version 2.0-7ubuntu11" at the top and has some options (Install Ubuntu Server, Install in expert mode, OEM install) underneath. I select "Install Ubuntu Server" and press 'e' (I also pressed f6 for good measure). This gives me another black and white screen with the same title and the following text
setparams 'Install Ubuntu Server'
set gfxpayload=keep
linux /install/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu-server.seed quiet --
initrd /install/initrd.gz
I change this to
setparams 'Install Ubuntu Server'
set gfxpayload=keep
linux /install/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu-server.seed quiet nomodeset --
initr

How to install Ubuntu 13.10 64bit + Windows 8, each on entirely separate SSD's
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 27, 2013
Hello,
I'm a college student whose trying to install Ubuntu 13.10 on an entirely separate SSD than the Windows 8.1 SSD that's already installed and working. For absolute clarification, I have two SSD's: one (1) 240GB SSD with windows 8.1 installed and one (1) 120GB SSD that's a completely empty volume. Both are recognized by my UEFI Bios. Since I'm installing Ubuntu on an entirely separate disk, does this change my installation procedure? I'm following this article as a reference: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI
Thank you for the support, I really appreciate it. I'm a computer engineer but have literally no experience with Ubuntu or Linux.

Install Ubuntu 13.10 on 21'5" iMac Late 2013
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 25, 2013
Hi All,
I'm newbe on this forum and with Linux so I hope you can answer me.
I bought a new 21,5" iMac Late 2013 with nVidia GT 750M and I tried to install Ubuntu 13.10 by following this thread.
Everything seems to be ok during installation due to I can boot Ubuntu from my external HDD. However, I need to use NVIDIA drivers for my studies instead of using Nouveau.
After installing the proper driver package for my GPU I can't boot my Ubuntu installation, the SO stops loading just after selecting the SO (with the unix selector). showing a black (semi-purple?) screen with no HDD activity. Of course, NVIDIA driver installation ends successfully, even it asks for disabling Nouveau drivers before installation.
What's wrong with the system? Have I done something bad for the installation?
Thanks in advance.
PD: sorry for my bad english.
please wait...
