Internet Browser only install.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 19, 2004
Hi everybody. I've got a really bizarre question, and I figured the 'general' forum was the best place for it. I'm going to setup the situation first, and then ask you all what you think I should do. I think that will help clarify what I'm asking about.
I work for a local community college. We just recently implemented a web-based registration process. Now the registration room wants to have workstations that are web-enabled for students to use to register. Pretty straight forward so far... We currently have 6 old PCs running Windows XP for this purpose. These machines are over-burdened with the XP OS, and this allows the students too much freedom for other things (web-games, chat, etc.) I realize that we could manage these systems with windows group or machine policies, but I suggested that we run a stripped down Linux installation and mozilla-based web browser.
I have been given the permission to look into the forementioned alternative. I was th
Ubuntu "browser only" edition?

i have do build up some internet access device.
Basically, they are full PCs, and they have to provide a web browser, and nothing else.
I like ubuntu very much, it's a useful and simple distro, so i'd like to use ubuntu to build these machines.
How can i realize this?
Ubuntu Server + Links web browser ?
There is a way to install Ubuntu Server, then X server+something else and Firefox only, locking all the user interaction with the operating system, so that they can only browse and nothing else? (If i want to manage the machine, i'll login via SSH).
Thank you i.a. for the suggestions,
Is there a browser only distribution of Linux that will work on an older iMac?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 4, 2004
Just curious. My main goal here is to have a version of Linux that will boot up to a browser (Mozilla or Firebird, most likely) so that it's easy for someone to turn on the computer and start browsing the internet. I'd really like to have something that would run Java/Flash/Shockwave as well. It would be nice, but not 100% critical that it plays sounds as well.
My problem is that it's an older iMac, so I'd like something with as little overhead as possible. Another problem is that I'm still a Linux newbie. I've installed Red Hat/Yellow Dog/Mandrake, but they're good for holding your hand while they install. I've never built a system from scratch. The iMac currently has Yellow Dog 3, but found it dead slow and unresponsive, so I'd be taking that off but still want to have the capability of dual-booting.
Is this a job for Debian, or is there another distro that I should look for?
Any ideas will be very appreciated. Thanks!

Hi last weekend we sucessfully installed Slackware 9.0 with the offical Slackware linux cd set .We really like the distro and we had no real problems with the install .We set-up two user account according to instructions in the Slackware linux Essentials . We configured our modem with pppsetup it works
and connects to the ISP correctly, but we have a real wierd problem .We can only use the browsers when we login as root .When we use the browsers on a user account the browsers try to acesses web pages but for some reason
they are unable to do so. We have tried every browser on the KDE desktop
but to no avail. We really like the distro but if the only way we can go on the inter-net is as root we`ll have to change distros So I hope someone can help us out there

location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 15, 2011
I see there is no NimbleX forum anywhere or Slax which is where NimbleX came from. Any way here's something you might be interested in. If you all might want to try it.
I uploaded an ISO file of a custom Kiosk I created within the last week.
It's got the new Firefox 5.0 and that's all just the web browser!
The link is here:
or on this page:
if you want try it out on Virtual Box,
install it on a flash-drive with "Unetbootin"
or burn the image to a CD or mini-CD.
It's only around 117MB
