Kernel Panic fixing
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 22, 2013
Hello, first of all i just want to tell you that I'm very new to the Linux world, so please be patient.
Ok, so here is my problem. I tried to update my server through webmin, and it all failed, so i though, "hey, just forget it", so i cancled it.
When I'm trying to boot into "12.04.1 LTS (GNU/Linux 3.2.0-3x-generic x86_64)" (x = can't remember) I get kernel panic (kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unkonwn wn-block), so I've tried to boot into a older kernel, which worked (12.04.1 LTS (GNU/Linux 3.2.0-32-generic x86_64).
Now I want to get back to normal, and by that I mean that it automaticly boots into the newest kernel installed, without getting kernel panic.. Any ideas? I've tried the rescue disc, but i don't know how to find out where my root folder is ( not '/' but:
device to use as root file sytem:
Assemble RAID array)
When I booted into kernel 32, was met wi

kernel panic not syncing : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 27, 2011
kernel panic - not syncing : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown - block (0,0)
sudo mount /dev/sda5
Error after 12.04 install/update: "Kernel panic not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount"
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 19, 2012
A frustrated perennial newb here. After installing 12.04 on a section of my hard drive, it seemed to work. I was able to get into the OS (without the GRUB screen coming up) and I installed all the updates and the nvidia drivers.
But when I restarted it, I got a black screen with "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown lock (0, 0)
blah blah blah...
I'd write the rest but my laptop's dying. The posts I found on other sites were completely unhelpful. Like I said, I'm a beginner, so I need it explained to me, step by step.
Argh! This is frustrating. Things always seem to break when I upgrade...
Thanks for your help, in advance.

I keep getting the Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! error on boot of my Fiesty (ancient, I know) installation, dual-booting with windows XP. The recovery console highlights the error as : kmap atomic +0x5c/0xz0 SS:ESP 0068df905df8.
It does not boot at all.
Error " kernel panic not syncing " after compiling new kernel
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 12, 2009
Yesterday i tryed to do my first kernel compilation, and when i try to load it i get the error:
[ 0.624435] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)
The steps i followed are the next:
1-Download the kernel and place it in /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.31/
2-make menuconfig and load the old configuration
So i go to the /boot/ folder and i found the new files System.map-2.6.31, vmlinuz-2.6.31 and config-2.6.31.
I noticed that the other kernel i have already installed ( 2.6.24 ) have an initrd.img-2.6.24-generic file, i tryed yaird to generate it, but it throws me the following errors:
mkinitrd.yaird -o/boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-generic 2.6.31
yaird error: unrecognised device: /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio0/input
yaird error: unrecognised device: /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio0/input/input1
yaird error: unrecognised device: /sys/devices/virtual
