Activating VNCserver from putty (ssh)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 21, 2005
Question: I have a PC running Ubuntu that I would like to use without monitor, keyboard, mouse (so basically, just the tower). I would like to use vncviewer to graphically access it from my other PC. (Running FC4 or XP).
Problem: vnc-server does not start unless a user has logged in to Ubuntu (which requires keyboard and monitor, at least).
I am able to log into it using ssh x.x.x.x (from FC4) or puTTy (from xp) before actually logging into Ubuntu. Is there a way I can run vnc-server remotely?
If i use ssh, and run
vnc-server -depth 16 -geometry 1024x768
(or something like that) I get an error that says
"gtk-warning, cannot open display"
Thanks to all.
(I apologize if this question is answered somewhere else, I'm new here [and new to linux])
LXer: Install Lenses And Scopes In Ubuntu 12.04 (SSH, Reddit, Wikipedia, Flickr, Grooveshark, Spotif
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 28, 2012
Published at LXer:
Most of the Unity Lenses and scopes, that adds extra functionality to dash menu have been updated to work with Ubuntu 12.04. Some lenses like Wikipedia lens are new releases. A Lens adds an extra new category to Unity dash allowing you to find specific results from local sources, web and even do calculations. A Scope adds a new source to an existing lens. For example, you can add Flickr scope as an extra source in Photo Lens.
ssh no longer works after upgrade from ubuntu 10.10 server to 11.04
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 16, 2011
I upgraded to ubuntu server 11.04 a while back, and ever since then the ssh does not work. For example, if I try to log in it seems to take my credentials but immediately kicks me off. Further looking in the log shows pam_open_session() module is unknown. I do remember it asking to upgrade some /etc/security/something.conf file, so maybe that has something to do with it. I have no clue how to fix this, and for now I'm stuck using my host's out of band access (and no sftp or scp either). Any help is appreciated.

Ubuntu 6.06 Server(SSH Setup/Putty)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 16, 2006
I really need some help guys. I mean I don't get frustrated too easily but indeed, I hate when I don't understand something. I do apologize first and foremost if my questions are a little too newbieish. But indeed, I have the distro's above, and I need to quickly find out how I can go about setting up SSH so i can putty to the mail server(ubuntu 6.06 box). SSH port 22 is enabled on my weak router/modem(isp standard issued) but I want to setup the ssh server to my ubuntu server. I want to directly putty(client) to it. Can anyone give me to syntax for getting the ssh packages and installing them on this box?
Thanks in advanced....
RSYNC + Crontab Tutorial using SSH or Daemon

How To Backup Directories/Files on a Remote Machine & Local Machine using RSYNC and CRONTABS on UBUNTU 9.10 Karmic Koala and most likely Hardy & Jaunty
This tutorial will show you how to run rsync using ssh to access the remote machine and an rsync daemon in order to access the remote machine. Most people like to use ssh as it is the more secure way without a lot of fuss. I have both methods installed on my machines and like them equally.
REMOTE BACKUPS using RSYNC via SSH
This method will run backups on your local machine as root securely while not logged in as root.
FIRST: Install on your local machine openssh-client <signed in as root>
$ apt-get update && apt-get install openssh-client <or just use Synaptic Package Manager>
Install on your remote machine openssh-server <signed in as root>
$ apt-get update && apt-get install openssh-server <or just use Synaptic Package Manager>
vista/ubuntu gedit across a ssh fails
- date: August 3, 2008
On Vista Machine cmd prompt
Putty/SSH into linux box
cannot open display:
Run 'gedit --help' to see a full list of available command line options.
:/home/james# DISPLAY=:0.0 gedit
:/home/james# DISPLAY=:0.0 gedit &
So from above: Gedit cant open DISPLAY and fails
Setting DISPLAY to :0.0 and executing gedit gives no failure msg but doesn't open GEDIT on the Vista Screen
Adding a trailing Ampersand gives 6846 and still fails to open Gedit on the vista screen
Any help will be appreciated
SSH Host RSA Key not matching knownhosts file. Connection works.
- date: May 20, 2013
I've done a completely fresh ssh setup with a host on rasberrypi and client on ubuntu. I've removed the known_hosts file on ubuntu and connected successfully to the host. Where I am confused is, when I cat ssh_host_rsa_key.pub on the host, I do not get the same key listed as when I look at the known_hosts file on the client. The ssh_host_rsa_key returns what I expect: ssh-rsa .... [email protected]
The known_hosts file does not match this same format.
Everything is working, I'm just confused as to why they do not match. I'm a noob and am diving into this all, I just can't figure out the mismatch and would like to know my error. Thanks for any help.
