[SOLVED] 64 bit Linux, 8 gig RAM, 32 bit wine
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 13, 2011
I read something about how a 32 bit OS isn't effective at utilizing more than 4 GIGS of memory. I don't really understand the issue very well. What if I install a 64 bit OS but then I install 32 bit wine because 32 bit wine has less problems. Will the Windows programs I run in wine utilize 8 gigs of memory? How can I check?
Oops, I meant to put this in the hardware forum. Sorry. I guess I'll report it instead of double posting.
redhat enterprise linux 4 boots slow with 2 GB RAM , boots fast with 512MB

I have assembled a new machine. Its Intel P4 3.0E Ghz HT enabled processor on ASUS P4P800-MX motherboard. I am using onboard graphics and sound. [Motherboard Spec]
Socket 478, Intel865GV, Hyperthreading ready, integrated intel graphics, dualchannel DDR400, 10/100Mbps LAN, Serial ATA
I have put in two 1 GB dual-channel RAM chips (OCZ technologies) in it.
I installed "Redhat Enterprise Linux 4 WS" on it (installation went super slow..took around 3 hours to complete). Now, it takes RHELv4 a whopping 18 MINUTES to boot up. WindowsXP pro (the other OS on this dual boot machine) boots up in less than 30 secs.
Since my ASUS motherboard is SMP-enabled and my processor is HT enabled, RHELv4 installed an SML kernel and a normal kernel. But I get the same (very poor) performance from RHELv4, no matter which one (of t

"The most amazing is that this machine just cost as a better standard PC, but has 24 cores that run each at 2.4 Ghz, a total of 48GB ram, and just need 400W of power!! This means that it hardly gets warm, and make less noise then my desktop pc.
Render jobs that took all night, now gets done in 10-12 min."

32bit Linux and 24 GB RAM

I am wondering if a 32-bit SUSE Linux can run on a board with 4 / 6 core Westmere-EP processor (intel) and 24 GB RAM. It is perfectly ok if it runs and only 4 GB is used and 20 GB go waste. But, the question will it run straight away? Any tricks needs to be played? Or It is impossible?

What Linux distro to install in a computer with 64 MB RAM and a Pentium processor
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 19, 2009
I have an old computer. I has only 64 MB ram and a processor which i think is pentium or cyrix(cpuid). Which of the distros is compatible with this? Formerly, it had XP but it crashed and I want to revive this computer. I want Linux to be the new OS for this old computer. I want to use this as an offline computer, just for making documents, presentations and other school work. Any help will be appreciated. And kindly suggest links to the OSs suggested.
By the way it has no CD-ROM, but I can borrow a CD-ROM from a friend.
Thanks and Cheers!
Hoping to hear soon from anyone of you...
Best OS based Linux Distrobution for a AMD K6 (200 MHz) with 64 MB RAM
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 12, 2014
Hello Linux Users,
I have a old AMD K6-200 with 64 MB ram. It has a SoundBlaster 16 on it, and a Ultra66 PCI secondary IDE controller. The system features 3 PCI and 4 ISA slots. I am using a DIAMOND Stealth VRAM graphics controller (ISA) with 1 MB intergraded memory. The system will boot a CD but I do not think that it will boot a DVD. If it does that would surprise me. What do you all recommend that I put on this old girl? I would like to file share between it and Windows 2000, and possibly my newest PC which is running Windows 8.1 Pro. It needs to be preferably up-to-date, but not too slacky. If it has to be text based I suppose that would be fine. I am kinda new to Linux so I will have to do a little bit of studying.

Kernel only supports 64 GB of ram .. What do you do if you have more?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 30, 2006
Well I am trying to figure something out. If the kernel only supports 64 GB of ram, well what happens to the extra ram? Does it just not get detected?
Say I have a server with 128 GB of ram, what happens to the extra 64 GB's? Is there a patch or anything that will let you overcome this ram barrier?
I really need to know asap.
