[SOLVED] Unzip .tar.bz2
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 21, 2008
I'm having a ton of problems unzipping a file for my class project.
I'm suppose to unzip a .tar.bz2 file but when I do
tar -xjvf linux-2.6.24.tar.bz2
it will not actually unzip the file at all. The main error I get is "mkdir : Permission denied". I have build-essentials installed, I did chmod 775 to the directory (which is under /usr/src/) but have no luck so far.
Thanks for any help.

How Exactly to Install a Proprietary Linux Audio Driver (tar.bz2)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 13, 2014
I've installed Ubuntu 12.04.3 on an old PC with 1GB ram, 160GB HDD. All is well except no sound. I downloaded a Linux audio driver package for my Avance '97 Realtek sound system as a tar.bz2 file. Instructions say for automatic install: Execute ./install
I do not know how to execute that command (terminal?), in what directory to type in that command, or in what directory I should place the tar.bz2 file in order for it to be found later by the sound system. (I already attempted the command while in the download directory - unsuccessfully. And I've searched hard for the answer online, but came up dry.)
Can anyone tell me exactly where to place the compressed file before extracting it so that the drivers end up where they should be when done, and the exact way to issue the command correctly? Thanks in advance.

Linux command (unzip p) run with execmavenplugin
location: linuxexchange.com - date: April 27, 2015
I have my.zip file under project’s target/ folder.
Inside my.zip there is a file named names.txt. If I run linux command under project root:
unzip -p target/my.zip names.txt > target/names.txt
I successfully get the names.txt extracted to target/ folder:
I want to execute the same command with exec-maven-plugin defined in pom.xml.

Runtime.getRuntime.exec() not working for the linux command “tar xvf filename.tar”
location: linuxexchange.com - date: April 11, 2013
I am trying to untar a file on a Unix machine, using a Java batch application.
String fileName = "x98_dms_12";
Runtime.getRuntime().exec("gunzip "+ fileName + ".tar.gz");
System.out.println(" Gunzip:"+"gunzip "+ fileName + ".tar.gz");
Runtime.getRuntime().exec("tar -xvf "+ fileName + ".tar");
System.out.println(" Extract:tar -xvf "+ fileName + ".tar");
When I run the batch program it does not (completely) work. Only the gunzip command works, converting my fileName.tar.gz to fileName.tar. But the untar command does not seem to do anything, and there is no error or exception in my log or Unix console.
When I run the same commands in a Unix prompt they work fine.
The path of execution is correct because it converts my *.tar.gz to *.tar
I cannot use "tar -zxvf fileName.tar.gz" since the attribute "z" does not work on my system.
There is no error or exception thrown.
Please do help.
