BF1942 Linux dedicated server...dead.
- date: January 27, 2007
Running 6.06lts server. Pretty much the default LAMP install of the AMD-64 version. Had some trouble initially with missing 32 bit compatibility libs, fixed, and had the server running flawlessly for about 2 months. Today, my weekly chores of "apt-get update" and "apt-get install" appears to have broken the server. I'm unable to get it to start, it dies with the following error:
./start.sh: using statically linked binary
Fatal error: Failed to bind socket
I neglected to take note exactly of what security update occured, and I'm too noobish to know where to look in my logs for that info. I remember is being largish (30mb?) and consisting of 3 or 4 libc packages (sorry, I was in a hurry, and distracted ) and I think the version was 2.6.2
The only thing that's changed were the security updates. Any ideas on how I can fix this? Oh, btw, using the latest released versi
Imagemagick php execution on Linux Dedicated Server
location: linuxexchange.com - date: April 17, 2012
I'm doing some ImageMagick stuff. Here is my command:
/tmp/fe0e3b88601d254befc115ca6a50365b.png -alpha set -channel alpha -background none
-vignette 0x3 -resize 66x89 /home/setsail/public_html/microsite/images/oval_thumb
This code feathers and resizes the image. It works fine on localhost (I'm using xampp on localhost) both in the shell and in php code, and works fine on my dedicated server in the shell.
But, it doesn't work at all on dedicated server with php code. Here is my code:
$cmd = "convert ".realpath($temp1)." -alpha set -channel alpha -background none -vignette 0x3 resize ".$width."x".$height." ".$dest_img;
ImageMagick is properly installed on server and active as well as I see it in phpinfo()
Any ideas why it's happening and what should i do?

U shouldn't need to reinstall just do that and if it doesn't work then reinstall and do that. Or you can just read what I read, its for 1.5 but it works for 1.6 too....

pros and cons small "linux box server" versus dedicated "NAS box"
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 30, 2013
I'm wondering about the pros and cons of using a small "linux box server" instead of a dedicated network attached storage (NAS) box.
I have all sorts of parts and hardware and can easily do either, but I'm wondering about the preferences of my LQ colleagues.
I know that NAS boxes provide file services based on most of the popular protocols for linux, mac, and win-dose. Some also include printer services. Most have some sort of built-in web-page for box administration. I have not done an exhaustive search of other NAS features but I'm sure there are others.
A small linux box can do file and printer services, but it can also do any of the things that full-sized linux workstations and servers can deliver -- limited only by the power of the total server configuration.
NAS boxes are largely turn-key -- they do what they do -- and they are largely set-and-forget. A small linux box is a server complete with full-sized server admin needs.
Thanks in advance,
Source Dedicated Server (srcds) in Linux
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 24, 2008
I'm interested in running a source dedicated server in Linux. Right now I'm running it straight from a windows desktop. If I were to install ubuntu to the computer, would I see any improvement? Would this be a good switch?
PS: Garry's mod (a game srcds can run) and crashes chronically. Is there any way to automatically restart the program if it closes?

Help ! How to launch/install Java on a dedicated server under Linux
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 12, 2005
I have a Linux account on a dedicated server running under Linux. I can access to the SSH command-line.
I'd like to run a Java application (a single .class file), but when I type "java javaTest.class", it saids me that java is an unknown command, so I think this means that Java is not installed ?
Do you know how to install Sun Java on this server ? Can a non-root user do this, or do I have to ask to the root ?
I'm newbie in Linux, and my domain is web-design and programming
Thank you !
Olivier (excuse my bad english ^^)
