Linux under VMWare Player running under Windows 8. Can I access my HD?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 3, 2013
10 years since I used Unix so everything is a little rusty.
I need to run a Wiki (TWiki) so I have installed VMWare Player on my Windows 8 laptop and sorted out a TWiki site that all seems to work.
I want to transfer my old Twiki files which are sitting on my Windows HD. How can I get my Linux VM to see my HD?
Linux Mint 13 (MayaMate): Solution To Pairing Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 18, 2013
Linux Mint 13 (Maya-Mate)
I've been working on trying to pair a (Apple) wireless keyboards for a month. Finally, I found a solution.
Blueman Bluetooth manager, would occasionally flash an error message: "Fail to lauch Thunar. You can enter an alternative browser in service self." I opened Blueman, clicked on local services, scrolled down to the Advanced option, and opened it up. The Advanced option box had thunar/obnx %/ written there. I still don't have a full understanding of what Thunar does but I surmised it is some sort of file system that's needed to run anytype of wireless / bluetooth device. I found Thunar in Package Manager, but when I marked them for installation I recieved a warning, "these packages are unstable, haven't been tested, and could compromise the security of your computer". I Ducked search again and came upon a thread... were someone mentioned that Thunar was a no go, as was Nautilus so, his other option was to try Dolphin. I tried Nautil
I cannot access facebook or netflix from my linux computers
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 28, 2011
The problem started happening a few days ago. Only my linux computers are affected. Yup, that's right. My roommates running windows have zero problems.
What's the problem? Suddenly, I cannot access 2 websites: namely facebook and netflix. I just get a "waiting for facebook.com" status from my browser, and it waits there patiently until the browser finally gives up. I haven't found any other sites that give me this issue. Gmail, youtube, flickr, etc all work fine.
This happens using both firefox and chrome browsers. I've tried using Ubuntu 10.10 (on my desktop) and Peppermint (distro based on ubuntu, runs on my laptop). Both machines access the internet via wifi. Both have the same problem! o_O
Both machines are up-to-date. I've rebooted many times. I've tried booting an old kernel. I haven't installed any new software lately. I've tried disabling all plugins for the browsers. I've tried power-cycling our internet modem. I've tried changing my DNS settings to use Goog

Microsoft Family Safety access from a Linux desktop
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 27, 2013
Since I am responsible for checking some security reports for some kids
that use a windows computer with Microsoft family safety installed
that is located at the home of a family member that is not so tech savvy
and quite dyslexic.
I need to be able to log in to the family safety website from within Linux.
I have the Hotmail account that is coupled with that to relay the messages
to my Gmail that I normally use, only those reports are send to the Hotmail
nothing else. This relaying works fine and normally there is no need to
look into the usage data from this computer they use some games school stuff
and view some youtube and so on.
Lately however there is a sudden increase in possibly inappropriate material
(in the recently blocked part of the e-mail I get every week).
that has been blocked (mostly porn) and since there needs to be a talk
with one of the kids (we know which one) I would like to be able to login
to the family safety website to have a better understandin
Access a Linux server from a browser
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 19, 2008
I have a multi-user web application installed on Linux. For example, I have mysql installed in Linux server and users can use their browsers to access this application "mysql" (through Apache2 and php 5) by using phpmyadmin tool (phpmyadmin/sql is just an example). I need to monitor the processes created in Linux when users access this application (usually there are apache and mysql processes and might be other processes/threads). I can't determine to which user/users (here I am not talking about unix users, these users are phpmyadmin/mysql users)these processes belong. To solve this problem, I am thinking to create a unix user in the Linux server to each one who wants to use this application from his/her browser. For example, I want to create a user "john" in Linux, john will login to the Linux server using his username and password from his browser, and after a successful login, john can use this application (he also needs to authenticate to this application)
Setting Linux Access ACLs
location: linux.com - date: September 13, 2012
1.1. Setting Access ACLs:-
The filesystem moust be mounted with acl option by the command for example:-
mount -o remount,acl /mount_point
and the reconfigure this option in the /etc/fstab file to save the changes during the booting of the operating system.
There are two types of ACLs: access ACLs and default ACLs. An access ACL is the access control list for a specific file or directory. A default ACL can only be associated with a directory; if a file within the directory does not have an access ACL, it uses the rules of the default ACL for the directory. Default ACLs are optional.
ACLs can be configured:
1. Per user
2. Per group
3. Via the effective rights mask
4. For users not in the user group for the file
The setfacl utility sets ACLs for files and directories. Use the -m option to add or modify the ACL of a file or directory:
setfacl -m <rules><files>
Rules (<rules>) must be specified in the following formats. Multiple rules can be specifie

Keyboard Problem During Linux Installations
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 11, 2012
Have a VERY old Dell box I want to renew with a Linux install (also as OS test drive for my new computer build). Downloaded, checked, burned, checked Puppy Linux 4.2.1, Linux Mint 10, Peppermint Two, and Kubuntu 11.10. All discs are fine.
Have set up BIOS to boot to CD/DVD before HDD.
I get to a spot, though, where the install freezes up. Based on my experience with Puppy, it's where the software is trying to detect my mouse and keyboard. Puppy recognizes my mouse correctly, but I can't hit "Enter" on keyboard because Puppy does not recognize the PS/2 keyboard I have. The other OSs freeze at a spot where the icon is on screen and the dots have been changing color, but suddenly the dots stop changing color and the install disc is not spinning.
I have tried a USB keyboard, thinking that might be the culprit. I have changed the BIOS to disable "Legacy USB" and then I reenabled it. Nothing.
Do I have the wrong distro releases? Do I need to reformat my HDD to do a fu
