[SOLVED] Fix broken packages in Linux Mint
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 29, 2015
I tried to install ffmpeg so I could use FF Multi Converter and he says "Unable to proced, fix broken packages first".
But nothing really happens after clicking Edit > Fix broken packages, and the same message re-appers in Synaptic Package Manager upon trying to install ffmpeg.
I can't remember now what was the last installed package before this one. Could be Update Manager earlier in morning, but I'm not quite sure.
Please help undoing that!
My distro is Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies.
tortoisehg : Depends: mercurial (< 2.2) but 2.6.1-1ppa1~precise1 is to be installed
Depends: python-qt4 (>= 4.7) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: python-qscintilla2 but it is not going to be installed

Synaptic does not show any broken package. Tried following that also did not help.

Hello, thank you very much for looking at my topic!
whenever I try to add new programs I get this error:
"Could not apply changes! Fix broken packages first."
So I went to Package Manager>Edit>Fix broken packages but it seems to think none of em are broke. I also tried:
sudo apt-get -f install
And that didn't work either.

I am new to linux. I started upgrade to 8.10, but by mistake I shut offed my laptop in between. Now when I start Update Manager, I get a message regarding fixing of broken packages / files. How to do this? Can I revert back to my previous system settings / condition of 8.04? Or I have to fresh re-install 8.04?

By using Ubuntu Tweak - Update Manager I got only one package that needs to be update (upstart, event-based init daemon). However when I click on the Install Update I'm getting this message in a window:
Could not apply changes! Fix broken packages first.
So now my question is... how do I fix the broken packages?

I new to Linux, decided to start with Ubuntu 9.10. Tried to install Wine. First added to the repository "ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa" as instructed. Reloaded. Clicked the "click this link" that goes to appt://wine. Clicked OK to launch the default application "apturl". Clicked "Install" for "Install additional software?" I was then told, "Could not apply changes! Fix broken packages first." Closed that, went to System -> Administration - Synaptic Package Manager. Clicked Edit - Fix broken packages. After that, also clicked Mark All Upgrades. After that, Reload. Tried Wine installation again - same results. Rebooted and tried again - same results.

I am using 10.04 64-bit and Update Manager frequently pops up with a list of 25 program updates totaling about 44MB. Every time I hit install, the "Fix Broken Packages" message box appears.
I have gone to Synaptic and the bottom status message indicates no broken packages. Still, I run the fix broken command in Synaptic. While this process seems to do something, the update error persists.
I have checked all my sources and they appear to be correctly going to the Lucid 64 repos. I have also tried to run apt-get update and apt-get install to no avail.
I have both Gnome and KDE installed and the problem is consistent across both desktops. Your thoughts of a solution are welcome. Thank you.
