Creating linux persistent bootable USB drive from iso
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 11, 2010
I am trying to install Linux (the distros I have attempted it with are Arch, Fedora, Ubuntu and Mint) on a USB drive and make it work like a removable hard drive, keeping programs and settings.
I tried it manually at first, partitioning the drive with Fedora's "Disk Utility" and dd'ing a Fedora 13 iso over.
I should note here that I have definitely configured the BIOS correctly, enabled booting from removable media and set it as the default with all other devices disabled, but that I have never actually booted from USB before with this motherboard.
On bootup I got

Linux on a USB

I've been thinking about getting Linux and using it on a USB but I'm not sure how it will work on a USB as I have never used Linux before. I wanted to get Linux so I could play games on it and not have any of the games interfere with the host computer I'm using. Would it be possible to use a USB that has Linux on a Windows computers? Well, I think that the Linux runs off the USB but I'm not sure. Also if I have a USB with a U3 system is that the same as having a Linux system?
Cant get Linux Mint Live USB To Boot With GUI
- date: July 24, 2013
I'm trying to dual boot my new Acer V5-122p with the pre-installed Windows 8 and Linux Mint 15 Mate. The laptop doesn't have a DVD drive, so I have to boot through USB. When I boot Mint in UEFI mode, the Mint logo appears as if it's going to work, but then it just goes to essentially a command line([email protected]
~ $) and gives me an error saying, "Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the x server output to diagnose the problem?" It basically ends telling me, "The x server is now disabled. Restart MDM when it is configured correctly."
Someone suggested I try:
sudo Xorg -configure
("Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices. Configuration failed. Server terminated with error (2). Closing log file.")
sudo cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
("cp: cannot stat '/root/xorg.conf.new' : No such file or directory")
