[SOLVED] How much swap space do I need for Linux Mint 64 bit?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 28, 2010
I have a new desktop with Windows 7 64 bit installed. I'm used to older laptops with less RAM, what I did was make the swap partition as large as the installed RAM. But this desktop has 4GB RAM. Do I need that much swap space? If so, it's no problem, I have plenty of space. I'm running Linux Mint in a VM and would like to install it as a dual boot. I have the 64 bit edition ISO already downloaded and written to disc. Windows 7 is great for a lot of things, but security isn't as good as with Linux. At first, it was secure, now I'm being plagued with spyware and malware. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

Linux kernel exploit roots 64-bit machines
Tom Espiner ZDNet UK | September 22, 2010 8:38 AM PDT
Attackers have used a freely available exploit to target a number of 64-bit Linux machines, according to a Linux patch management software firm.
The exploit is particularly pernicious, as it can leave a backdoor on systems that have workarounds deployed, according to rebootless Linux security update company Ksplice. The stack pointer underflow weakness has been given a common vulnerability code of CVE-2010-3081.
"In the last day, we've received many reports of people attacking production systems using an exploit for this vulnerability, so if you run Linux systems, we recommend that you strongly consider patching this," said Ksplice chief executive Jeff Arnold in a blog post on Saturday. Exploit code was made available on the Full Disclosure mailing list on W

How to install linux mint 64 bit with windows 7
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 12, 2014
I watch a tutorial on youtube and I did a "shrink" to my Win7 but when I run linux on LIVE USB it doesn't show me the option of linux min alongside windows.
It might be related to the fact I got already 4 primary partitions (of 1 hard disk) ? and after I "SHRINK" one of them there should be 5 . But when I got to linux mint it show me the "unallocated" space I shrinked and it doesn't let me format it or anything .
it is possible that if I merge 2 of my partitions then Linux mint will show me the option of linux alongside windows.
BY the way, linux mint 64 bit "rebeca" is WOW!!! my harddisk made a lot of crazy sounds on windows .. but here.. its all quiet and responsive!! every website I open is smooth .. I'm amazed of the linux world.

I've tried using this command on terminal:
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
Sadly, it did nothing and it showed this:

This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or

How to get 32 bit JRE path on 64 bit Linux with 64 bit browser and 64 bit java plugin
location: linuxexchange.com - date: May 11, 2012
My application consists of three components:
Java program (myapp.jar)
JNI library (myjni.so)
Please note that JNI library is built for 32 bit. On 32 bit OS, applet uses java.home property to get the JRE path. Once applet gets JRE path, it launches JAR like this
Now I need to run this application on 64 bit Linux. Here I have two options:
Build JNI library for 64 bit.
This is not possible as all depended libraries needs to build for 64 bit. ( This is a constraint at my end)
Ask users to install 32 bit JVM
Now problem is how to get the 32 bit JRE path as java.home property gives the 64 bit JRE path. ( Because browser and plugins are 64 bit). One option is to use update-alternatives –list java command to get all JRE installations path. Then for each installation path, run JRE-path -d32 –version command to see whether it supports 32 bit JVM
If it supports 32 bit JVM, use that JRE path to launch JAR file
If none of the java installations s
