Linux Mint Newbie, software recommendations
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 16, 2009
Hi, I've dabbled with various Linux Distos on and off for a few years,
after initial tasters with knoppix live cd, I went a head with a full install of Linux, dual booting along side windows.
Since I'm called Ian and my partner is Deb. I opted for Debian, great but too technical and after a house move and a swap to wifi internet, couldn't get wifi to work.
Next came K/Ubuntu, great for a while, but then after an upgrade wifi stopped working and defied all attempts to work again. Read somewhere that this was an Ubuntu problem, with too rapid upgrades that fixed some problems but introduced new ones.
Finally after a friend told me about Linux Mint, I've finally been able to ditch windows completely and go totally open source.
As you will notice the heart of everything has been Debian, and my desktop of choice has been Gnome, I have tried others things, like Mandriva and KDE, but returned to where I've felt happiest.
I've long browsed these and other forums for help and info, and mu
Linux Mint 7 Software Index Broken
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 22, 2010
Hey there, first time poster and relative noob here, and I have a problem. I'm running Linux Mint 7, and recently recieved an error that my software index is broken. I can't install, update, or modify any new packages. I've already tried the solution of entering sudo apt-get install -f in a terminal, and this is the output I get.
~ $ sudo apt-get install -f
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Malformed 3rd word in the Status line
E: Error occurred while processing libfuse2 (UsePackage2)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
Any help possible would be greatly appreciated, though if need be, I could back up my work and preform a clean install.
Failed "update" to linux mint broke software sources
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 9, 2010
When karmic was just out I wanted to try Linux Mint 8 Helena before it was released. So I followed a guide online how to update using debs from the linux mint page. Well.. I only came half-way before something broke and I cancelled the installation - I now also realize that I don't want Linux Mint.
So.. Everything works fine except software sources! I first thought it wasn't a big deal because I could just update the sources manually until Lucid - but trying to install wine repos was a no go since it uses the new format: ppaxxxxxxxx which only works using software sources and not directly in sources.list. Actually if someone could just tell me the karmic repo for wine I will probably be fine until Lucid since I imagine this might not be easy to fix:

I'm trying to install nemo file manager (not the Mint product) - it is a document handling app that uses a calendar like system to manager your documents and files. But the name conflicts with Mint's Nemo File Browser. So how do I install it?
It's listed on the top 100 open source gems for linux at linux website. that's where I found it.

Software Center (Lubuntu/Ubuntu/Linux Mint) 12.04 LTS
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 8, 2013
Since all systems are based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Do all software centers contain the same programs? Or one has more options than the others?
I know who you can install Ubuntu software center on Lubuntu and Mint. But wonder why. Only explanations is if there is a difference somewhere. But even then, if you find it to install, it will also install all required packages.
Anyhow, a bit confused...
