Whats the difference between vi editor in Red Hat linux and Ubuntu?
location: linuxexchange.com - date: November 15, 2014
I realize a difference in vi editor of ReD Hat and Ubuntu. In my company, I'm working in Red Hat. In that, the vi editing commands working as usual. Say, 'dd' to delete,'p' to paste, 'yy' to yank, etc. But in Ubuntu, if I open the vi editor in terminal, then the commands are not working properly.
Even to switch vi to Insert mode, I am supposed to press 'I' many times. I can type coding after some struggle. I can't delete a letter by pressing 'Delete' button. If I press 'Up', 'Down','Left', 'Right' keys, then some alphabets are being written in it.
Why this is happening? How to resolve it? Is this because of Ubuntu?

Looking for linux XML editor
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 24, 2008
I'm afraid I have no clue which forum to post this in. I did quite a bit of searching but to no avail.
I am looking for a linux XML Editor that is similar to a Windows based app called XML Marker.
This is not for web development but instead scripting that uses XML for a video game. Currently using Vim, which is okay.. but doesn't check all that much. XML Marker quickly shows tag format errors.
But XML Marker is not available for linux. I thought of perhaps using Wine.. but I think that would be kinda dumb... except maybe as an exercise in using Wine as I have never tried.
KXML Editor looks promising, but not sure about something designed for KDE. Sadly there is no live Kubuntu available. Maybe I'll run it in VirtualBox to see if I like it.
Any recommendations would be great.
[SOLVED] vi editor in ubuntu turns me off
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 24, 2012
I have worked pretty comfortably on rhel servers with vi editors and It comes like a smooth free flowing editor.
The story becomes interesting when I work on same "vi" editor in Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop edition....
if I do "I" I cannot see I have entered "insert mode.
If i press down or up arrow key some funky letter comes up on screen...
I am extremly annoyed on this, why is this happening on two different distros I would like to know if there is any problem with ubtu vi editor....

Really trying to get this server to work and abandoned trying to do it with Xubuntu last night and installed Ubuntu server. But now I'm stuck on Samba again as I decided to use the vi editor to edit the smb.conf file and now I can't get out of it.
Big mistake will not use it again.
The Vi Editor
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 2, 2007
I have recently been reading a book about Linux/Unix. In a section that talks about programming (scripts and such) it says that everyone should make sure to learn the Vi editor.
My question is, is it really that important??? I do understand that you may run into a situation where you visit a client and their Linux installation is just a server installation without the GUI. Also Vi is probably standard to most Linux installations. So I can see where it would come in handy that way. But how often do businesses/other potential clients not have a GUI installation??
Thanks in advance.
