Linux Reset all settings
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 28, 2013
First, I am sorry if this is the wrong section, I usually just find myself lurking on these linux sites and getting advice that others have posted; but this time I am curious as to what is going on.
I woke up my Linux box tonight and everything was reset. The screen resolutions, Firefox favorites, my Documents were deleted, my Downloads were deleted. Fortunately, this is my HTPC, so I do not have too many important files; but this was also my "trial run" with Linux, so I would like to figure out what is going on here. I definately did not install any updates last night and it was working fine last night, well at least all favorites and bookmarks were there.
Anyways, I am not sure what else to post. I hope you guys are kind, as I realize I probably should be staying in the "Beginners forum"; but I do not think this is a beginners problem. I have had this setup for at least 3 to 4 months now - new I know - but not that new.
ubuntu linux copy all files from folder with extension including subfolders in a cron
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 4, 2012
I've been working with cronjobs and now im looking to automatically backup the files in my www/domain/, but there are a lot of files not needed that would just take up a lot of space, like the images and such.
Lets say i would want to only copy the files from my root folder (and its subfolders) with the extensions .php and .inc, is that possible??
i would want that every hour, and then i a folder with the date added to it...
would my cron look anything like this??
date= `date -I`;
5 * * * * cp /home/tobias/www/sb/ /home/tobias/www/backup/sb$date/
i mean i know that simple line would work, but it needs something added i guess. So i need it to filter to only .php and .inc files, but keep a filestructure, so if these files are currently in subfolders those would need to be created or copied too....
What would i add and where or change of course?
Thank you in advance!
is there any voice recognition software for linux? yes or no

I've had this headset for months, and I have not found one trace of voice command or recognition software for linux. If there isn't any, I'd be happy to try and code some.

Hey, I'm writing a program in Python that aims to make Linux easier, and cross all distribution boundaries. I don't really care if Automatix or EasyUbutnu has already done this, or already done that, since I tried both, and both resulted in me needing clean installs of Ubuntu.
As the thread title implies, feel free to do w/e to me on this thread (laugh, boo, etc.) but really I started it to get some constructive feedback and help. I'm going to finish this project, so don't tell me to stop or "Why are you doing this at all?". Also, I respectfully ask you to keep "Automatix [or EasyUbuntu] rules!" or "Nobody need this!" type comments to a minimum. Thank you.
Seeing as this thread is so long, if you have a suggesti

I think im finally ready to have a Dedicated Linux system, I have just bought myself a shiny new 200gig drive so im am giving this 120gig to my brother. Trouble is its Dual booting Suse 8.0 pro, with WinXP Pro and my brother doesn't want any thing to do with linux just yet (you can't change em all huh ) So im going to delete linux from the HDD. To make it simple for him i would like to keep the XP installation in tact, you guys know what a pain the M$ OS is when you have to install it .. then spend 2days updating it and so on, well some of you probably don't
I have searched the forum and have found a couple of usefull solutions, however i have come up with my own and just wanted clarification from you guys to see if it might work.
only a couple of dead simple tasks
1) Delete the linux, and linux swap partitions using partition magic (since thats what i created them with)
All users SSH > YES ... All users Console > NO
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 18, 2010
First off, I am a super Newbie, so I apologize ahead of time. I have found many answers on this forum already. I have inherited a RedHat 5.4 server that is having an odd issue. Root and all of the user accounts can log in via SSH. Not a single account can log in via the console (sitting in front of the server). If I bring it up in single user made, I can log in with root all day long.
I want to say that this has something to do with PAM, but this is when I play my "Noob" card. Could anyone possibly steer me in the right direction to figure out what is going on?

So just a little while ago I got sick of win7 starter's sluggishness and inability to successfully display my java eclipse output and decided to switch to linux.
I'm using LiLi USB Creator to make my live USBs.
First I tried out arch linux which was going absolutely fantastic until I realized that I needed to use a custom kernel to get my wireless working, and without my wireless working (and no idea how to properly mount any sort of external drive in linux) there was no way I'd be able to install the kernel.
So I gave up and decided to try Ubuntu. I created the live usb just fine and tried to boot from it. It went past the bios screen and to the blinking command line underscore, which stopped blinking for a moment. At that point a line of text popped up highlighted in purple and then green for a split second (it could have been green and then purple). After the text, the netbook hung displaying a command l

Linux without all the UNIX? Boot to quickly to X and Gnome only?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 11, 2002
I just recently installed Mdk 9.0. I have been running linux since 1995, and over the years my feelings have grown stronger about linux becoming too bloated. It takes far too long to boot. Also, I don't really want to have all of the extra services running. I don't use them and they are just security risks. But, mostly I just want it to be quick at booting and using a lot less memory.
How hard would it be to create a system that simply started networking only, and then X, and then the login for Gnome? I want to skip any of the extra unnecessary stuff, all of the bloat that scrolls by during boot. XP boots in less than a minute (it has the fastest boot I have ever seen in any OS since DOS), while linux takes well over a minute. With Real Audio player and more open in XP I still have over 100 MB of free memory. I don't think this would be the case in Mdk/RH Linux these days (it isn't on my machine).
Is there a distribution like this already out there? Would it be hard to
true or false? linux supports all hardware
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 30, 2009
i was told that linux supports all possible hardware. there are open source drivers available for any piece of hardware no matter how old, armies of programming nerds spend their time writing software to get things to work. but nor everything is perfect, the drivers that they write only offer basic functions of the hardware. hobby programmers cannot compete with the paid programmers of the big companies, so that is why linux has so many driver issues and/or crippled functions/features.
so what can be done about this? does ubuntu hire programmers to help fix their OS? or do they have trouble attracting top talent who would rather work at google or microsoft?
