My Notes for Installing MediaWiki on Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 13, 2012
Greetings and salutations,
I hope this thread will be helpful to those who follow in my foot steps as well as getting any advice based on what I have done / documented.
This is a Work-In-Progress topic so I will be updating this thread as I learn more about Ubuntu and MediaWiki.
This thread will cover installation of a dedicated Ubuntu server, Apache Web service and MediaWiki web site. The server will be installed inside a virtual machine vSphere 4.1 running on ESXi 4.1 servers. Although there are some VMware-specific steps, they are very few and the majority of this documentation will work for other VMs such as VirtualBox or even directly installed onto a physical machine. Please excuse any ignorance on my part since I am fairly new to Linux and MediaWiki...if you have any advice on doing things better, please let me know. I love feedback and learning better ways of doing things!
After Ubuntu is installed and configured, Apache web server will be installed
Uninstall encrypted Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 26, 2012
I am trying to learn Linux server and installed 12.04 LTS on an older company Dell PowerEdge 840 with hardware RAID 1, 2x250GB drives, 6GB of RAM. I've used regular Linux OS before, so I am somewhat familiar with Linux. I don't know terminal commands, though.
The problem is that I selected the encrypted option. For some reason, my network card wouldn't communicate with the network inside or outside the company. I couldn't even download a GUI module. Now I would like to remove the installation completely and start over.
Can you please help me figure out how to do that?

ubuntu server 12.04 lts postfix receiving mails?
- date: March 30, 2014
i am purely new at the cloud servers.. almost happy.
ok, first of all - i did:
sudo apt-get update,
installed all the apache2, php5, mysql, etc.
after all i did installed postfix, and followed many guides and instructions,
none of them explains the configurations well.
i succeed sending mails from the php by 'mail()' function, that's nice..
but the BIG question is how to configure incoming mails?!
i added into '/etc/postfix/virtual'
the line - '[email protected]
admin' (of course i changed 'mydomain'..)
and finally i added the folder path to the incoming emails.
when i tried to send mail to my address, there where no failure, but either success, none file were found at the folder inbox destination.
1. how to fix the incoming mail issue (what ports should be open if needed?)
2. is there any option to connect the mail by external mail client with pop3/imap?
that's it i think. it is super important for me because this is the only thing left undone i
Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS + AutoLogin
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 21, 2014
i have an VPS-Provider with "Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS" and i also installed a GUI / GNOME (graphical desktop)!
Then i setup a new user and i activated the AutoLogin for this user!
I installed a .exe programm with Wine and i also insert this programm into "Startup Applications".
The Problem is, that the AutoLogin doesn't work. Off course i have to enter a password (even with autologin) in NXClient to get connected to my server, but i see that my autostart application (.exe) has also started just in the moment when i login with NXClient. So i thing the AutoLogin doesnt work.
Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS Question about partition.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 8, 2012
Hello, im using Ubuntu Server 12.04 and obviously im new to linux so i have a couple questions regarding a partition.
I was looking in the system monitor tool and i have a partition called "/dev/sda1". I was wondering what information is stored in this area and if 9.3GB is big enough to accomodate everything in this given space. This is where my root directory is located ( / ).
So more specifically, should i be concerned about the amount of space i have allocated to this area, (will update files be applied here?) and is this normally an area that users give a consiterable amount of space?
Various USB bugs on Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 25, 2013
since 2 years I am running an heavily modified (new CPU, new RAM, new HDD, new GPU) HP desktop as a server using Ubuntu Server 10.04 and lately 12.04.
Now, I have decided to upgrade it to a HTPC (with Satellite TV, video archive etc.). For this, among other things I got a Technisat SkyStar USB HD (DVB-S2 tuner) and a Microsoft Wireless 800 KB/Mouse combo. And so the problems started. Both KB and Mouse are extremely laggy (>2sec) and the tuner takes nearly 2 minutes to tune to a channel. If I connect a keyboard to the PS/2-input, it works smooth and perfect. I decided to test the hardware with a Mythbuntu Live-USB-Stick, which, however, took ages to start (after 30min i reset the system).
From this, I figured out that the problem is the USB port, so I took an NEC USB 2.0 PCI card I had floating around and installed it into the system. The card itself was detected, but the ports don't work better.
According to dmesg at startup the system tells me that IRQ 19 and 23 o
Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS and SmbClient/Samba Issue. Please Help
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 10, 2012
"smbclient: symbol krb5_locate_dke, version krb5_3_MIT not defined in file libkrb5.so.3 with link time reference"
I have reverted Samba to 3.5.11~dfsg-1ubuntu2 while setting up BackupPC. The reason to run 3.5 is because 3.6 has a known issue with Junction Folders which produce stop errors when you run the backup.
so now we are trying to downgrade libkrb5support0 and libkrb5-3 to a 1.9.1+dfsg-1ubuntu each. Any risks with this downgrade? the libkrb5support0 file shows a LOt of removed packages (saying 757mb will be freed) and it doesnt show that they would be reinstalled.
