Mandrakelinux 10.1 Hangs on Shutdown
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 1, 2005
After using Mandrakelinux Update, now my computer hangs up on shutdown. It looks like it gets to the last line of code, the computer clicks, and there it stays. The only thing I can do then is hold in the power button until it shuts off, or just unplug it.
How can I correct this behavior?

I've been trying to install Ubuntu 12.10 on a server, it went fine the first time but now I want to do a reinstall.
After I insert a hostname in the installation process I get the purple screen with a white/grey bar at the bottom and it doesn't do anything.
Can anyone help me out with this?
ubuntu 5.10 install hangs like michael jordan, missing packages?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 1, 2005
i just got ubuntu 5.10 running on my system as a means of both fixing my very old dialpidated system and getting out of MShell and back into linux. the first time i installed it, the install stopped during phase II at about 79% of configuring the system/packages, i tried it again and same deal but at 44% so i run the recovery mode kernel via grub and get my prompt. after i dont know how much tooling around and not being able to start gnome, i find a message suggesting i try this command "dpkg --configure -a". it installs a bunch of packages and i can run gnome now, but with problems. the initial error in the install program said something along the lines of "could not install packages, may lead to broken packages, manually fix this yourself, or retry with a similar but different set of packages" which would then dump me to a shell prompt. the errors im getting now are semi-critical... the trash can applet and the mixer applet cant be found when loading gnome, and i

Ubuntu 10.10 CD hangs while Booting
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 1, 2010
I requested a Live CD from ubuntu. when it arrived i booted from it to try Ubuntu without installing. i booted from the live CD for about 5 times. now when i want to install Ubuntu it just hangs when the booting screen appears (when its written Ubuntu and 5 dots are flashing behind the word)
now i dont know what is the problem, i have also tried a different CD-ROM but same result. the CD is new/ scratch less but it just wont boot. hangs up all the time. Now i dont know how to install Ubuntu.
1- i can make a bootable USB. i downloaded the ISO and made a bootable USB with Universal USB installer, set my computer to boot from removable but that too didnt work.
2- or i can write my own cd. i will do that but i just wanted to find out why the CD doesnt work after working for 5 times.
SLES 10 Network Hangs
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 13, 2008
I have a SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10, the network will hang once in a while, can't ping the server, or ping anything from server. The server itself is ok. After run service network restart, everything works fine. Checked the log and couldn't find anything unusual. Not sure what is going on. When run service network restar, I do get some messages, but not sure if this is causing the problems. Anyone has any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Suse 10.3 hangs on PentiumD 64bit 1GB Ram
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 16, 2007
Hi! I've installed SuSE 10.3 64 bit on my new Intel-Duo 2.66Mhz 1GB RAM system. It should work fine, but sometimes, i don't know why, one or both CPUs are working 100% and the system freezes.
Sometimes i can swith to terminal 1 and kill some processes and i get the control again, but in most cases it is not possible and i have to turn off the box. I'm also using SysRq keys to Sync and Remount RO my disks when it happens, but it doesn't work always, and i get "not clean partitions"...
I'm using Ksim and KDE-System Watch to monitor my system, but i don't know how can i find the problem.
the overload cannot be because of too many programs, because mostly i just use Opera, Amarok, Kmail, Kopete, a few applets and Ktorrent or Mldonkey... It used to work with Suse 10.2 on my old P3 450Mhz and 500MB RAM !!!
Can you help?
Thanks in advance! jtm_tango
Ubuntu 13.10 Install Hangs
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 13, 2013
I'm attempting to install 13.10 on a desktop machine. I was previously able to install 12.10, albeit with difficulty due to the Nvidia card in the system. The upgrade to 13.10 kept failing, so I tried installing 13.10 from CD.
I get to the location choice screen, when I get a very small dialog box with nothing in it but a white "-" on a black disk (like a European "Do Not Enter" traffic sign) "??? ???". I can click the "OK" button, but nothing happens. Clicking the "X" to close the window doesn't work either. It won't let me progress past this point.
I downloaded and burned the ISO twice and it seems to be valid.
I get the same result whether I do the install from "try" or "install".
The system is a home built server with two mirrored SATA drives. It previously ran Fedora just fine.
ECS Nforce 4 A939 MB
1 gig RAM
Nvidia video card (works with manual configuration under 12.10)
I haven't found any reference
Fedora Core 10 install hangs
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 8, 2009
I am trying to install Fedora 10 on my system using a Fedora 10 DVD. However the install hangs after the welcome screen when I click on "Next". I have to manually restart the system then.
I have tried using 2 different DVDs as well as using the ISO downloaded from the Fedora site. I currently have Fedora 8 and Win XP dual boot system and want to upgrade.(I know I ought to upgrade to 9 first and then 10 but I faced issues in installing 9 also. More ever I am ready to format the FC 8 root partition if required, as I have a seperate home dir where the data is kept.)
The DVD's are fine as when I try to intall them as a Virtual image using QEMU, it works.
I googled before posting here and tried out passing various kernel parameters - noProbe, acpi=off, resolution=1024x768 but no luck.
My system configuartion is:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 processor
Intel DG41ty motherboard
4 GB RAM
250 GB SATA drive
Samsung SyncMaster LCD Monitor
Microsoft Optical mouse
