Guide to Best Linux [Ubuntu (GNOME)] Applications - Latest Sep 17, 2007
Hello There
I always keep looking for best application available on Linux for my tasks. A simple Google search does give some good links but most are older, or don't provide a comprehensive comparison, and arguments as if why is any particular app better than others. Also most miss is, the certain features which the better app in question lacks or is inferior at.
So i decided to write up an article myself so that others may get help from it.
Though not complete by all means, i will be writing as better as possible. Some categories don't have comparison in cases i don't have used them much or they don't need one. I am writing this from my experiences accumulated with time. I will try to be as concise as possible.
This will also give you a list of popular apps.
User reviews, additions, comments & criticism are welcome and appreciated.

I will say that all the hardware doesn't work quite right but its a work in progress. There will be more added as we figure out more. So keep your eyes on this thread.
Things that don't work
1. Accelerometer - unable to have the screen rotate automatically and grab the data from the device (we are getting close to having it work)
Things that work
1. Touchscreen's single input
2. Webcam
3. Microphone
4. Touchpad
5. Wireless/Bluetooth
6. Multitouch (Works Partly!)
I'm not sure how the 3G slot works because I didn't get one on mine. Anyone who has any news about that please share.
First Steps
Go ahead and update your system completely.
Pop open Update Manager and install all the updates available.
This will take some time based on your Internet speed. Go grab a cup of coffee and watch this Documentary on Linux

Hello all,
I originally created this guide on Ubuntu Forums' website under sports.car.guy. I am contemplating removing it from there thanks to an Op on a power trip and his treatment towards me. I tried to help someone, answered their question, and in the process stated how not searching could be why he received no reply and also how google is a great resource. I got written up for suggesting good habits when trying to solve a Linux problem, besides giving them the answer.
This noob did not like the response I gave or the one from another poster because we were the only two to reply and explained how it only really matters on the GPU itself not the card maker and the nVidia 8800 was well supported. So the noob blatently violated their COC went off about how we were jerks, etc. I replied that I gave him what he was looking for. I also stated because he brought up how he did search and found nothing that if he put in the GPU model and linux into a search engine it would come up, bu
A Guide: Enabling 3D Acceleration in X11 Page 47

Hey there. I am using a laptop with VIA Chrome9 HC IGP chipset. (VN896)
Slackware 13 (32 bit). Using openchrome driver
When I run "glxinfo", I can't find anything saying DIRECT RENDERING yes.
When I tried glxgears, FPS is 170 ~ 190.
I thought there is no direct rendering happening since when I load DRI and DRI2,
glxgears shows a bit slower FPS, 150 ~ 160.
When i disabled dri and dir2, I get 170 ~ 190.
Reading the docs from openchrome:
http://openchrome.org/trac/wiki/Supp...rdware#Chrome9
It says that DRI is not implemented. So does it mean that I have to accept
the fact that there will be no real 3D (hardware) acceleration on my laptop?
k9copy guide and Ubuntu repository
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 24, 2005
As a dual boot person, I find myself try to limit my windows use less and less. But I still have to go back every now and again. One reason I will always need windows is games(right now it is BF2) and another is DVD backup. The reason I'm posting is the second. I have tried DVD Shrink(w/ DVD Decrypter) in wine and it works just fine. It just seems a little slow. Then I heard about k9copy. I thought great, a native linux app to do the same thing. But my problem is it always seems a fail at the end of the process.
Does anyone know of a good guide and reliable deb repository?
My current distro is Ubuntu 5.10 so that will affect the repository choices.
I already have k9copy on my desktop(but I screwed around and added official deb repositories, taking my chances). I just need a stable Ubuntu repository for my laptop.
But my main concern right now is a guide that is good to help me out.
THANKS!
