Seagate 2T HD vs WD 2T HD
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 17, 2012
I'm prepared to buy a 2T HD for home use. I have been running WD Caviar Black series for sometimes, having full confidence on its performance and quality. However on searching I found Seagate ST2000VX000 2TB Barracuda offering much better price, very interesting.
Seagate ST2000VX000 2TB Barracuda SV35.5 SATA3 6Gb/s /64MB HDD (7x24 Digital Video)
WD Caviar Black 2002FAEX 2TB SATA3/64MB HDD
SATA Hard Drives
Maximum performance for power computing
Could you please shed me some light on selecting them? Is the quality of "Seagate ST2000VX000 2TB Barracuda" reliable? What about its performance vs WD Caviar Black 2002FAEX 2TB?
Opinion nvidia ion2 vs AMD Radeon HD 6250/6310 netbook
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 2, 2011
Hello, I need to buy a couple of new netbooks to use as portable htpc this week and I'm torn between the two graphics options.
I already own an intel atom nettop with ion2 so I'm aware of how that performs.
These new AMD systems seem really nice and I was wondering if anybody has an opinion about them vs a nvidia ion2 system.
Either platform will cost ~275 USD per unit. Both will display 1080p.
The reasons I'm leaning towards AMD fusion:
1) fusion cpu/gpu technology that was developed for the latest generation of gaming consoles eg. xbox360 slim that solved their overheating issues.
2) it should be more energy efficient than an intel/ion system these will be netbooks not nettops
I'm thinking a basic 6310 model. eg.Asus EEE PC 1215B
Can anybody enlighten me further as to which of these graphics platforms would be better for my situation. HTPC running a basic xbmc in
Nvidia 9500GT Vs 9800GT for HD/H264/X264/BluRay playback?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 22, 2009
I am planning on converting my myth box into a full blown htpc. The config is as follows:
AMD Athlon 64x2 5200+ cpu
Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H motherboard
ASUS EAH3450 graphics card
700 Watt ATX modular power supply
Currently, this rig stutters in any HD content playback - H264/X264 etc. I have tried practically everything - prop drivers, configuring crossfire with the on board HD 3200 graphics, vesa drivers - but it just does not work, and even gets unstable with prop drivers.
So, my plan is to get a NVIDIA 9xxx series card. I looked at two of them at newegg:
1. EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
2. ASUS EN9500GT TOP/DI/512M GeForce 9500 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
I know that 9800 GT should be a lot more faster than a 9500 GT, but my intent is only to be able to playback HD content smoothly for my HTPC. Given that one card costs mor
Ubuntu 12.04 won't recognise the Micromax MMX377G USB Modem
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 19, 2013
I switched to Ubuntu 12.04 (64bit) completely 2 mths back from Windows. I was using Reliance Netconnect wth Huwai Modem, configuration for which was pretty much automatic. However, I am having to switch to another connection BSNL on Micromax MMX377G. It came with an instruction manual, but i have been unsuccessful in configuring it s far.
here it goes.
Step 1 : plugging in the dongle with SIM (all unlocked)
Step 2 : Check the device
~$ ls /dev/sr*
Now the manual says if it shows the above output, it means that th software has been installed before and the asks me to uninstall it with the following :
~$ sudo dpkg -r 3g_modem_connect_D301_MMX_amd64.deb
dpkg: error: you must specify packages by their own names, not by quoting the names of the files they come in.
Step 3 : Mount
~$ sudo mount /dev/sr0 /mnt
mount: no medium found on /dev/sr0
So i searched online there were lots of threads on previous models,
I did the following :

[SOLVED] Linux Foundation Oil On Canvas Painting
- date: June 15, 2012
After submitting my design for the Linux T-Shirt contest I was inspired with good energy to paint.
I have a finished 18 X 24 Oil On Canvas painting I'd like to donate to the Linux Foundation.
I have e-mailed the Foundation with a Dear Linux Foundation etc. e-mail asking the Representative if they would like to view the painting.
I'd like to hear what others think-
How and where would I post it so all Linux users could view it?
I used GIMP to transform / rotate the painting and it is still on it's side...Anyone know why?

How to batch add 200 white canvas pixels to rotated JPEG bottom edge
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 3, 2011
In the Windows side, with Irfanview freeware, I would open a directory of, say, 500 JPG digital photos, and simply click the buttons to add, say, 200 white pixels to the 'bottom' edge of the (properly rotated) JPEG files. That would kick off a batch job which does the task.
On Ubuntu 10.04 lucid, I can auto-rotate these pictures running "exiftran -ai *.jpg" in the terminal window (which rotates based on EXIF orientation information) - but how do I add 200 white pixels to the bottom of each photo in Ubuntu?
I can easily "resize" the photos but what I want to do is ADD a white canvas (for later manual text caption editing with KolourPaint) to the bottom of each photo.
Gimp can add that canvas manually:
Open the photo in GIMP 2.6 on Ubuntu 10.04 lucidImage -> Canvas size -> break the chainAdd 200 pixels the the height figure & press "Resize"Colorize to white (from the checkered layer)Save the results
Then KolourPaint will easily annotate the can
