[SOLVED] Mistake when fixing sound problem with Skype
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 3, 2013
Once again I had a problem getting any sound from Skype after upgrading. This time from Linux Mint 15 to 16. Once again, the only way of getting it working was to get rid of Pulseaudio altogether. I happened to (by mistake, I think) close the terminal too soon after the killall business, and now I get a report: ERROR###ERROR###ERROR###ERROR###ERROR###ERROR###ERROR
E:Invalid record in the preferences file /etc/apt/preferences, no Package header
I find a file /etc/apt/preferences containing only the word "exit", nothing more. Can I safely get rid of that file without causing any damage?
sound & microphone problem in skype
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 22, 2012
I'm an absolute beginner and have Xubuntu 12.04 installed on my HP 635 (A1E51EA) Laptop.
Although there is no problem with the sound in several applications, in the test call of Skype 2.2(Beta) I don't hear anything. Moreover, there's no response when I try to adjust microphone settings in "PulseAudio Volume Control" and of course it also does not work in the test call of Skype.
Do you have any idea about how to solve that problem?
Microphone problem with Pulse Audio
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 21, 2012
Some time ago I could not get the microphone working. So I did some looking around in these forums and installed Pulse Audio.
I found a master control screen (I'm nearly sure in Pulse Audio) that had about a dozen vertical bars controlling all aspects of my audio. At lot were disabled, so I enabled everything. It worked, except that the microphone was always on.
I suffered this for some months but my wife doesn't like it, so now I want to fix it so that the microphone only works when I have a use for it, which is normally for Skype.
But I cannot find the master control screen! How do I find it?
Your help appreciated.
problem with skype
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 22, 2008
I'm running xubuntu 8.04 and I just installed Skype for Linux, which seems to work for text, but when I try to make a call or someone calls me I get the error message "problem with audio capture" and the call fails. The other party gets a message saying I have a problem with my audio recording device (I don't actually have a mic plugged in atm, but I've been told that I can still make calls without one). Has anyone experienced this problem or have any suggestions?

Having a problem with Skype and my music on Debian 6.0.4
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 31, 2012
I installed Skype from Skype's website, and everytime someone logs in or logs out, my music will become silent. It still plays, but there is no sound. That is pretty much all I know right now...
aptget dependency problem (with skype)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 9, 2005
I'm on a kubuntu (breezy) box.
I installed skype (using dpkg). It had a dependency on libqt that I had to force it to skip, because the libqt installed here has another name.. in other workds, it's OK, but apt-get thinks there's a missing dependancy.... so, I asked for apt-get upgrade and it says it has to remove skype.
What can I do to keep this from happening?
[SOLVED] Microphone will not work with Skype!
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 29, 2011
Since 'upgrading'(?) from Fedora 14 to Fedora 15 I cannot get my microphone (Logitech USB headset) to work with Skype. It works OK in other applications, such as Audacity.
The headphones work OK but not the mic. When I got to Settings > System Settings Multimedia > Phonon I get set the audio capture to appropriate option (Logitech USB Headset, USB Audio (IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output) but the setting does not stay. If I go out of settings and back in again it has reverted to 'Internal Audio Analog Stereo'.
I have searched high and low for a solution but nothing i have tried has worked. This is a major issue as I work from home and use Skype a lot.
By the way, yes I AM using Pulse audio. I did consider uninstalling it but it wanted to uninstall virtually every other application as well.
