Need help creating custom install
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 17, 2010
I'm trying to install some version of Linux (at this point I'm not picky about which) to an old Sony PCG-505VE:
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 98 (4.10, Build 2222) A
System Model: G23R2.0.0/ENU (Phoenix)
BIOS: EPP revision 9.00
Processor: Intel Celeron, MMX, ~333MHz
Memory: 64MB RAM
Hard Drive: 6 GB
CD-ROM (external): (PCGA-CD51) Toshiba XM-1902B ATAPI PC-Card
I found out that the only way to successfully run even a live CD requires the following command in the boot options:
However, this only works with a kernel that actively rescans (not sure that's the correct terminology) the hardware because the Vaio BIOS automatically re-maps the Cardbus CD-ROM to appear as IDE at /dev/hde instead of /dev/hdc (please see the following post for details written by people who actually understand this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=390309 ). I confirmed this with DSL which uses the 2.4 kernel (I haven't tried any other kernel versions beside

Need help with XBMC + Ubuntu Mini on Asus EB1501
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 13, 2010
Now i've spent 2 days trying to get these two HOW-TO's to work:
But i'm not that big of a Linux geek, so now i'm so desperate to find someone who knows how to install it.
Here is my steps:
1. Burning "Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" Minimal CD" on my 16GB USB-stick
2. Boot from USB
3. Select Install, Type username, location and stuff.
4. Select "Basic Ubuntu Server" + "OpenSSH Server"
5. PROBLEM 1:
The installer ask me to take my installation out - so i do. But, when i try to boot on the HDD there is just a blinking cursor. If i then try to boot up on the USB-stick - There is Ubuntu.. What tha?
6. Login via. SSH as user 'xbmc'
7. Running following commands:
- sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
- sudo apt-get install xbmc xinit x11-xserver-utils -y
- sudo apt-get
[SOLVED] first time linux user, need help setting up ubuntu to write code in fortran
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 7, 2012
I am a college student taking a class that requires programming in Fortran. I decided to install Ubuntu on an old laptop as the only operating system (both to use for fortran and to check out Linux [love it]). Ubuntu is installed, working fine as far as I can tell, and is connected to the internet and updated. Also, I found the terminal and have that pinned to the launcher. I have no real prior knowledge of Linux, but have used C and MATLAB before.
I need a code editor (not even sure if that's the right term, I need something to physically write the code), a compiler, and eventually need to be able to execute my code. From Ubuntu's software center, I installed gfortran and gnuplot, which is something that I will eventually need, but need to write the code before using that. I also installed all the add-ons for both.
I looked around a little in these forums for some help and also downloaded Intel's "Fortran Composer XE for Linux", which came as a .tgz file. I cou
Need help creating a script to delete part of a filename

Currently running Ubuntu 8.04 with MythTV 0.21.
I have run mythrename.pl to rename my recordings by "Title - Subtitle - Year-Month-Day.mpg"
So I end up like this:
"Heroes - Four Months Ago - 2008-06-05.mpg"
Unfortunately some of the subtitles are listed as "Untitled". This is the part I would like to remove.
"Black Hawk Down - Untitled - 2008-07-02.mpg"
"Black Hawk Down - 2008-07-02.mpg"
Is this possible?
Thanks for any assistance in this. :-)
Need help creating NAS/Print Server
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 18, 2008
I have an older Gateway that still works really good and I want to use it as a NAS and Print server. Here is my long situation. I am going to have a computer upstairs which I am probably going to install a Wireless Card in. I have an ibook which already has a Wi-Fi card in it. I also have an older imac which is going to be downstairs next to the server and I am planning to hard wire it directly into the router. My router is 802.11G and it works good. I also already have a 6 dbi omni directional high gain antenna. Can I use Ubuntu Server with it? I was thinking maybe I should wait for Ubuntu Home Server to be released, but that probably wont be released for a long time. Also, did I leave anything out. Do I need to purchase anymore equipment? How should I start putting the whole network together? I am looking to do this within the next few months.

location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 17, 2009
hi, i'm a owner of cyber cafe, and switched qwest T1 to Cox Business Cable.
Cox give me 64 IP Address and i want to set all of our computer has static IP for indivisually. So i asked cox tech. that how do i use all 64 IP address for my network, they said i have to buy Router or make Linux Router. So i installed ubuntu and installed webmin to set my linux machine as router. After that i followed instruction on webmin and i'm just stucked....Have no idea......
Cox Tech told me I have to route my 64 IP to Main IP address come from Cox Modem, and they said i can do that if i make linux system with webmin.
Here is what i want to do.
I just installed ubuntu on computer, and installed two Netwroks card.
and i have main ip (i'll call is as 188.8.131.52.) and they also give me extra 64 IPs that i need to route it to my main ip 184.108.40.206. (i'll say my extra IPs as 220.127.116.11 ~ 18.104.22.168)
and i installed WEBMIN on ubuntu, i don't know how to route the IPs...
if anyone knows, please help me.

KDE 4 Need help creating a desktop shortcut (embarrasing I know)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 9, 2008
Until I discovered KDE 4.1 I had gotten sick of trying Linux - it was less flashy than the free copy of Vista I had (Compiz was nice, but GTK's style easily wears on you), less compatible with the programs and hardware on my system, and Ubuntu releases seemed to be going backwards on those issues. But once I learned about KDE 4.1's cool stuff (the widgets, the better-than-Aero Oxygen theme, etc) I was compelled to give it another try. Once I managed to get World of Warcraft working on it, I was compelled to leave it on the drive for good.
Alas, not everything can go so perfectly. Although I've been having performance superior to Vista playing WoW, I have to start it each time by hitting Alt+F2 and typing:
wine "c:\program files\world of warcraft\wow.exe"
Obviously, this is a huge pain in the rear end (more so in the wrist). But when I created a shortcut using the instructions I found on WoWWiki and the Ubuntu Documentation, clicking it did nothing. I have yet to find
