Ubuntu NIS Server / Debian NIS Client Wonky Ownership
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 21, 2013
I seem to have set up NIS server on Ubuntu and a NIS client on Debian that works (mostly). I can authenticate as users that exist on the Ubuntu server, on the Debian box, but NFS mounts seem to have really wonky owners.

Server GUI "On Demand"
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 21, 2013
I have seen this question many times. "Should I install a desktop on a server" It always ends in no, performance issues.
I would like to find a way to have the desktop software available through RDC so I can login from a Windows Client and use the desktop. But only have the desktop process running when the user is logged in. The console should still only be terminal.
[SOLVED] Switching from Ubuntu Server (12.04 LTE) to Debian.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 6, 2013
Hi guys. I'm running a 64bit Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTE at home with apace2, ssh, rtorrent and storage disks encrypted with LUKS.
I'm thinking of switching to Debian stable and as far as i know every processes i use should work just fine since Ubuntu is based on Debian.
The question marks starts to appear when thinking of my storage solution. Will it work to install cryptsetup under debian and open my disks?
And are there any thing else i should consider before switching?
[SOLVED] VBOX headless ubuntu server
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 24, 2013
i have set up a headless vbox vm on ubuntu server 12.04. i've done this before from a gui distro no problem but reached an impass this time because ubuntu server has no gui for vrdp used by vbox for NATing remote connections. the issue is i set the machine up completely fine but need to now install the OS. when i start the vm it listens on port 3389 like it is supposed to but i can't access it via "rdesktop 127.0.0.1" because the server has no gui to use rdesktop and display the install process of the distro on the guest vm. this was a non issue before because my host OS had a gui but since this one doesn't i don't know what i should do. i don't want to install a gui because once the guest OS is installed rdesktop isn't needed since it will be accessed with ssh remotely via vbox's built in NAT function. any ideas how i can get this guest OS installed?
Debian 7 DHCP Server installation problem
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 2, 2013
Hey! I'm trying to install a DHCP service on Debian 7. As I have understood I have to install a package called "isc-dhcp-server." But when I try to install it in the terminal shows me the following error message:
"E: Unable to locate package isc-dhcp-server "
I checked the packages list available for Debian Wheezy and the package is on the list, however for some reason I am unable to find it. Also, I tried with Aptitude and Synaptic with no success. Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks a lot!
PS: I tried with dhcp3-server and couldn't find it either.

best virtualizer to install Ubuntu on a Slackware server
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 28, 2013
I am wondering what would be the best virtual machine application (virtualizer) to install Ubuntu (or a variant) in an existing slackware 13.1 server?..
I need to install a mirror of MusicBrainz onto my current slack server but the instructions to setup the musicbrainz mirror are purely targeted for a Debian based OS and of course not Slackware friendly. I first tried to follow the instructions at https://github.com/rembo10/headphone...cbrainz-Mirror but once I reached the cpan dependencies, I got caught in an endless loop of dependencies, inter dependencies, sub dependencies, etc with a significant amount that wouldn't compile...
Anyways being fed up I decided to opt for plan B, the virtual machine. Of course I need the Virtual machine to be totally transparent to the rest of the network and have its own IP address so it can be reached from any machine on the network as much as Headphones running on the slackware server (the host OS)...
Which virtualizer do you suggest?
edubuntu or ubuntu server?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 21, 2010
Hi folks. I am looking to set up a thin client server for my business. It will be small (~15 workstations) and the requirements are very modest (mostly web browsing). Looking at edubuntu, I see it comes setup and preconfigured with some features I was expecting to use, like ltsp, dhcp, menu editors/thin client management gui tools, gnome nanny, etc. In general its feature set seems very useful. However, I would like this server to have maximum longevity, since it will probably remain unchanged for the forseeable future once it's properly configured. I was originally considering installing ubuntu server 10.04 because of the long-term support promise of five years. I have had some trouble locating more documentation relating to edubuntu's integration with ubuntu updates and its support into the future on any given version. Does anybody have any input that could inform me to make the right decision? Thanks in advance!
