location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 23, 2011
Hi,
I just signed up for a VPS as Hostgator. They have Centos preinstalled but I'd much rather use Ubuntu which I'm more familiar with. How can I remove Centos and install Ubuntu? Any help much appreciated.

Ubuntu Server VPS Hosting
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 3, 2008
I'm looking for a starter VPS hosting plan that uses Ubuntu, gives me root (or jailed root), SSH, and lets me install stuff with apt-get. I see that Dreamhost doesn't let me have root or to do apt-get, and that kind of defeats the purpose of using a VPS solution.
In the price range, we want to start in the < $500/year USD ballpark but over time we can scale the site, continue reinvestment in the hosting plan, and move up the VPS plan pyramid and into the dedicated server plan pyramid.
Can anyone recommend someone? Heck, even if you want to start a company and offer this service reliably and in the < $500/year USD ballpark plus have graduated VPS plans after that, we'll consider you.
P.S. Here's what's driving this need. I'm a LAMP developer and my client wants me to build a job seeker starter site that we can grow over time. These job posting/search sites unfortunately require powerful and fast search engines. Integrating Google Site Search is not the best option because
PPTP with Centos Server & Win 7 client not providing default gateway
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 21, 2013
I am trying to setup a Centos 5.8 box as a PPTP server - it worked in the past and no longer does.
My issue is that the client (win7) receives 0.0.0.0 as default gateway and hence cant route anything. Cant ping the Centos box on the vpn @, cant access the web. When I uncheck the use default gateway box from win7, I can reach the Centos box.
I've disabled (temporarily) all iptables rules but the -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE - I have /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward set to 1
Any suggestion as how can the server provide a correct gateway address to the client ?
Tks in advance
pptp version is 1.7.2-8.el5
Game Server Hosting OS

Witch Linux should I use for just ONLY gameserver hosting only, such as Counterstrike, Quake 3,4, and the useual first person shooters, I am not looking for a free program to download, but if the free one is the best then I will use it, keep in mind that this will be running on a 1U Rackmount and I will not be there and must remotely control it from a laptop at home and will not need to load a graphical interface on system startup to save resources, it could be just running as a commandline server. The specs of the box will be:
Tyan S2925G2NR-E Serverboard
Quad-Core AMD Opteron‚Ñ¢ 1381 2.5GHz 2200MHz 6MB Socket AM3 75W
8GB, 4pcs of Kingston 2GB DDR2 667MHZ ECC KVR667D2E5/2G
1pc of Western Digital Caviar 2TB SATAII 7200 RPM
Sony NEC Optiarc AD7590A-01 Slim DVDRW E-IDE/ATAPI Black RoHS
Integrated Two nForce Pro 3400 integrated MAC w/ Marvell
If another OS would be better such as freeBSD in Linux mode please let me know, keep in mind that I dont know crap about Linux and will need all

Ubuntu Server vs. Cent OS
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 1, 2009
I know this is an Ubuntu forum, but I am looking for feed back. I am involved in a little adventure that will probably require our own server platform. We already know we are going with linux. My background is more Ubuntu based but I know a lot of servers are CentOS (in the enterprise). I would like to know why you would suggest Ubuntu for a server and what things bother you about Ubuntu as a server.
this server will primarily be a Web Server running the usual Apache, MySQL and PHP. There is always a remote chance something else could come down the line.
thank you,
Convert Cent OS server to Ubuntu

We have a dedicated server that came initially with Cent OS 5. It's a clean install, we have nothing there yet. We want to have it switched to Ubuntu Server. We have no physical access to it. Is it possible to do through SSH?
[SOLVED] Howto install an Ubuntu server as a virtual server on a Cent OS 5.6 host.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 3, 2011
Is it possible ?
I've tried to install it as fully virtualized, but alot of errors occurs during installation.
Using para-virtualization wont even start the installation. Errors on media contents, something like that.
I'm using Ubuntu server 10.04 LTS.
Trying to install on a CentOS 5.6.

location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 25, 2011
Hi,
When installing Ubuntu 10.04 or 11.10 server 64bit as a guest in a kvm host on Cent OS 6.0, there is at performance issue running the desktop in Ubuntu. The mousepointer is very slow and its difficult to use.
Cent OS 6.0 desktop works fine as a guest on the host, no slow mouse.
Any ideas ?
Regards.
