Ubuntu 8.04 distro upgrade to 8.10 problem (after install)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 18, 2009
Hi, recently I upgraded 8.04 to 8.10 (via online upgrade).
while it was installing, it had many errors (exit code 1, and exit code 2).
after I restarted it and it fully booted up, the screen looked all fuzzy and my mouse or keyboard didnt work, I think this is a hardware driver problem, On the boot process I noticed an error saying "Can't start hardware abstraction layer. please ensure dbus is running"
I think the solution to this is backing up everything using rsync onto a portable hdd and doing a fresh install. then rsyncing back
However, what I cannot figure out how to do is how to send the files to the portable hard drive as I can only work via terminal, the drive is formatted to ext 3 and its type (ie manufacturer) is imation.
Please post any advice for this, or any other that may help me.
Thanks in advance.

x problem after install of slackintosh on ibook

OK I'll start off with an introduction which you can skip if you don't want to waste your precious time
Me and Linux:
I kept hearing wonderful things about linux and it's magical stability and power in articles and stuff I read, eventually decided to try it out. bought an old junk computer from a local dealer, and I was off. Power? ok. Ease of use? way better than expected... sometimes... Stability? heh... depends... (yeah I know it can be incredibly stable for the sorts of things that really need it, but for general desktop, I'd say less than magical. put that way it sounds bad but I really mean "excelent" usually)
But being a windows user, I was hooked immediately. I eventually settled on Ubuntu because it seemed good - sponsored development, regular releases, the sent free stickers with my shipment of cds.
So that's me and linux.
iBook and I:
I got my brother's old iBook when he got a new one after spilling sprite on the keyboard - cost me a whole 15 dollars to g
linux install problem after loading kernel
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 13, 2008
I am using kubuntu since one month, and I upgrade the previous version to kubuntu 8.04. Just notice that this computer has a partition for xp, and an other one for linux. I change something in the fstab file (in order to solve a problem with the cd drive) and then I could not run kubuntu anymore, it crash even on recovery mode, the error message is the following:
etc/init.d/ r : 137 :red .permision denied
init is enable to execute "init/sh" for rc default permission denied.
I decided to boot from the live cd, but now nothing happens... it stops after loading the kernel:
and then I have a black screen with a black cursor, and nothing happens.
Is that normal,
Is anyone can help me?
Thank for your time,

Fedora 9x64 AHCI problem no boot (only CD Rom boot) after install
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 6, 2008
I can install Fedora 8 just fine. When I install Fedora 9, iafter I go through the whole installer and it formats, etc. and says to reboot, it reboots but then it won't see the drives. It just boots and says "booting from ACHI CD-ROM" even though there is no disk in it. BIOS confirms all is well with bios (the drives are connected, seen, in the right order for boot, etc). I guess this is a driver error? I have an Abit motherboard that uses AHCI (SATA). What can I possibly do?
won't boot after install UEFI problem?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 27, 2011
I just installed the most recent Ubuntu 64bit on a new homebuilt machine and the installation went fine but I can't boot to Ubuntu after restarting!
Some details: it's a new machine I built with my son, lots of RAM, Intel i5, MB is "MB ASROCK|Z68 EXTREME3 GEN3 1155 R", WD 1TB HDD, etc. He wanted the Other Operating System for gaming, so we bought and installed that no problem. Then we went to ubuntu.com and downloaded the most recent 64bit installation disk image; we had no blank disks around the house so instead we used some utility which ubuntu.com pointed us to in order to get a bootable USB stick with the disk image on it.
Restarted, got to the boot selection menu and booted from the USB stick. Had the usual Ubuntu installation dialog, then it finished, we restarted... no GRUB menu, goes directly to Windoze.
Started again off the USB, this time I chose "try Ubuntu". Ran Gparted and in fact the Windoze partition is shrunk and there is an ext4 partiti
Boot problem after fresh install of Lubuntu 13.10
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 20, 2013
I have freshly installed Lubuntu 13.10 on an old Advent laptop (1000 MB RAM) which was previously running Ubuntu 12.04. I changed because I felt Unity was a bit heavy for this machine and was quite slow. The installation appeared to have carried through successfully (in fact it told me it had).
However, the new installation does not boot successfully. After the splash screen I get an endlessly repeating black screen with the following:
* Starting LightDM Display Manager (OK)
* Stopping Send an event to indicate plymouth is up (OK)
Any suggestions gratefully received.
