Debian vs. Ubuntu?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 26, 2008
First of all, I would like to state that this in no way is intended to start a flame war, it is simply my curiosity getting the better of me. Please, if I seem trollish, I dont mean to be.
Now that THAT'S out of the way...
What are the major differences between Debian and Ubuntu? As far as I can tell, Ubuntu is a bit better about drivers, and the packages tend to be configured a bit beyond just the default settings. The other thing I can see is the significant lack of effort required to install it, though Debian isn't exactly slacking there either.
I seek enlightenment and nothing more. I'm positive that there are more differences in the underlying software and that I just can't see them.
Ubuntu package vs. debian package
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 28, 2005
A package I'm compiling has dependencies on glib-2.0.
The runtime version comes with the breezy distro, but not the dev-lib. And I can't find the dev-lib anywhere. So I figured, fine, get the source and make it. Spent many hours getting to understand dpkg* tools.
Then I found that there is a full distribution of the packages I'm looking for (runtime + dev lib) on the debian depot (http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages).
The problem though is that the debian packages use a slightly different version number schema. And so I can't match the dev lib from the debian depot with the already installed run-time lib (I get the dependency error - dependency not met because the breeze runtime is called 2.8.0-0ubuntu1 vs. the debian runtime is called 2.8.0-1). I tried re-loading the already installed run-time forcing the version to the debian package, but that looks like it would uninstall all kinds of stuff that depends on it.
So now I downloaded the source of the debian package to se

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!
I had used in the past Debian 4.0. Now I decided to install Kubuntu. I know that Ubuntu is build upon Debian. So I've got a few questions. Is it possible to install .deb pacckages from Debian disks or repository on Ubuntu? What about drivers are they developed like in Debian? What system utilities I have to read about first (like dpkg)? Is it present LAMP (Apache, MySQL, PHP) in Kubuntu?
ubuntu 12.10 considered very slow vs linux mint?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 5, 2013
I have a 1 month old, brand new laptop (thinkpad). It's basically the "reference" laptop to have for linux, and I installed ubuntu 12.10, super modern hardware.
I found it to be very slow out of the box. Is it the unity interface? Any way we can disable this completely?
Running calibre, eclipse, and chrome, and thunderbird would result in big time harddrive "thrashing" where there's constant activity.
I was thinking about buying an SSD simply b/c things were so slow.
On a whim I installed linux mint 14 (cinnamon desktop). I am not exaggerating when I say that it is literally 5 times as fast in every area.
I can run the aforementioned apps simultaneously without any problems. It's been a revelation.
My SSD purchase is on the back burner now.
I'm sure that the Unity interface has been a complaint and there's always going to be people who dislike change. Or maybe it's most people who dislike change.
But I found it quite hard as a newbie to know what is
Linux Mint 13 KDE vs Kubuntu 12.04: Is Mint KDE really better?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 17, 2012
I'm trying to convert someone to a *buntu and I think KDE would be really perfect for him. However when I tried Kubuntu myself it ran decently, but I got a lot of crash reports etc. Also I read a few Kubuntu 12.04 reviews and they didn't seem to be really good either... Also a lot of people say Kubuntu is a bad KDE distro and much worse than the other *buntus. However most people seem to be really excited about Linux Mint KDE edition (which is based on Ubuntu, not Kubuntu).
So my question is: "Is Linux Mint KDE (as of version 13) really better than Kubuntu 12.04?"
I'm also looking at Cinnamon (which I'm probably going to "use" instead of KDE, if Linux Mint KDE is just as worse as Kubuntu). I myself am happily using Unity (it fits me just right), but I think maybe Unity is a bit to confusing (global menu bar, to distinguish running programs and closed programs in the dock etc.). However I myself am really fond of the search functionality and I woul
Ubuntu vs Linux Mint

I've been hearing a lot of good things about Linux Mint lately, and was wondering what you guys think about it. Do you think it's good enough to warrant uninstalling Ubuntu in favour of it, or Ubuntu will be just fine for the time being? If you wouldn't mine, could you give me a short comparative analysis? Like the differences between installations, and does Mint use the same package manager, terminal, compiz, things like that, as Ubuntu?
Also, this is slightly off topic, but if I were to format my Ubuntu partition, would Grub go with it?

Windows vs Linux

Just received a Micro Center flyer in the mail. I carefully looked for computers that had other than Windows or Mac OSes preinstalled. It was pretty pathetic since I found only 1 and that was a Chrome Book.
Windows 8 isn't popular, but M$ has a marketing genius (or a real heavy hand ) since HP & Dell (2 prominent manufactures in the flyer) sell their system with Ubuntu Linux installed.
