ATI vs. nVidia

While I know neither has a stellar track record in Linux driver support, which one would be the best choice for a Windows gaming PC that also dual boots Linux when play time is over?
Nvidia GeForce 5500 drivers install question, 13.10 vs. 12.04, manual?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 6, 2014
Hello kind folks,
I have a 13.10 install and a GeForce FX 5500 PCI video card on a Dell Dimension P4 3ghz with 2GB Ram
To make a long story short, in 13.10 no proprietary drivers are recognized as being needed.
However, I get no OPENGL and only 2D unity, etc. Other 13.10 flavors of Ubuntu xu, lu - do the same thing.
I have a couple drives with 13.10 installed for experiments, etc.
I've spent hours searching forums and google looking for how to install the manual drivers, or what to do.
Maybe being in 13.10 vs. 12.04 LTS might be making it worse with kernel versioning - I'm not sure, I'm a noob but trying very hard to get smarter about how it all fits together.
I can get into the console and run commands, shut down the gui, etc. but I've tried a number of things and no dice.
I've sucessfully trashed my drivers, and had to remove them. I learned about how to get the machine back from this state.
At this point, any idea - how I can get the 173.x.x driver I need installed, or do I ne
Software reset (Nvidia) HDMI hardware on Ubuntu/MythTV vs Chromecast
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 22, 2013
Not sure this is the right forum, but spent a night trying different things and am at my limits...
I recently purchased Chromecast and love it, but am having trouble getting it to play nicely with my existing equipment. The basic problem (IMHO) is that Chromecast doesn't have an OFF (or at lease HDMI OFF) capability without pulling the plug, but don't expect that to be high priority on their list of things to do. It is so wonderful, why would someone want to turn it off? Here's why!
I have a homemade DVR running MythTV on Ubuntu on an Nvidia board w/ HDMI. I also have a DVD player, and now the Chromecast all connected to a cheap (Meritline) 3-port automatic HDMI switch. I suspect the switch is the issue, but would like some help confirming/exploring alternatives. Can't find any documentation on it... not sure it came with any...
The issue is that when Chromecast powers on, it grabs the switch like it is supposed to. However, it doesn't have an off capability so it never gives

LXer: ARM CortexA15 vs. NVIDIA Tegra 3 vs. Intel x86
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 29, 2012
Published at LXer:
Last week I shared some early benchmarks of the Samsung Chromebook while running Ubuntu Linux. The Samsung Chromebook is very interesting since it's one of the few readily available computers on the market employing an ARM Cortex-A15 processor rather than Cortex-A9 or other models. The Cortex-A15 found in the Samsung Exynos 5 Dual SoC proved to be very powerful and this Chromebook was quite a good deal with it being trivial to load Ubuntu Linux (and other distributions) while costing only $250 USD for this ARM-based laptop. In the past week I have carried out additional ARM Cortex-A15 benchmarks, including a comparison of its performance the the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core ARM "Cardhu" tablet and several Intel Atom/Core x86 systems.
Jaunty 9.04 with ati radeon mobility open source drivers vs. fglrx in 8.10
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 24, 2009
Please post you experiences with mobility radeon and 9.04 open source ati drivers!
Since there seems to be a lot of discussion on the fact that fglrx drivers (xorg-driver-fglrx) are no longer supported in 9.04, I am (and many more are) hesitant on installing jaunty on my laptop with the open source ones (xserver-xorg-video-radeon and/or xserver-xorg-video-ati). I have ati mobility radeon x600 (R300 series).
$ lspci | grep Radeon
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M24 1P [Radeon MobilityX600]
I tried the live cd and it was mostly working but I got some screen corruption and scrolling speed seemed worse.
I am interested at least on these:
The model of your video card.
The performance of : 2d (e.g., scrolling), 3d (glxgears), xv full screen (which resolution) video, xv windowed video? Especially compared to 8.10 using fglrx.
Did you have to tweak your xorg.conf?
Thank you very muchos!
Nvidia 9500GT Vs 9800GT for HD/H264/X264/BluRay playback?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 22, 2009
I am planning on converting my myth box into a full blown htpc. The config is as follows:
AMD Athlon 64x2 5200+ cpu
Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H motherboard
ASUS EAH3450 graphics card
700 Watt ATX modular power supply
Currently, this rig stutters in any HD content playback - H264/X264 etc. I have tried practically everything - prop drivers, configuring crossfire with the on board HD 3200 graphics, vesa drivers - but it just does not work, and even gets unstable with prop drivers.
So, my plan is to get a NVIDIA 9xxx series card. I looked at two of them at newegg:
1. EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
2. ASUS EN9500GT TOP/DI/512M GeForce 9500 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
I know that 9800 GT should be a lot more faster than a 9500 GT, but my intent is only to be able to playback HD content smoothly for my HTPC. Given that one card costs mor
nvidia twinview vs. 9.04
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 23, 2009
Just installed the 9.04 on my laptop and have some problems with the twinview mode with ubuntu/gnome/nvidia. Actually I have many problems...
1. I have two mouse cursors - one of each screen...
2. If I click on menu and try to start any app on the external monitor then the app starts up in the internal one -- it is ok if I do Alt+F2 and type a command, like xterm, then it opens up in the actual monitor
3. If I run FireFox on one screen, I cannot start another instance on the other screen
4. I had problems with the nvidia-settings -- basically I had to edit the menu to put gksu in front of the tool otherwise it cannot write into the xord.conf, but then when I click on save settings the app crashes with seg fault.
I think that's for now. Please wise me up if you have any idea where to look for solution, or if I have to raise a ticket for that.
LXer: SteamOS vs. Windows 8.1 NVIDIA Performance

For those NVIDIA gaming customers running Microsoft Windows 8.1 that have been thinking about giving Valve's SteamOS Linux-based gaming platform a try, here are some early benchmarks of the SteamOS 1.0 beta that compare the performance to Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro x64 on multiple NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards.
AMD Radeon 6450 vs ubuntu 11.10
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 21, 2012
Just bought a new PC which came with an AMD Radeon HD 6450 card. The e11.10 LiveCD booted and ran fine for the installer. Restarted. After selecting ubuntu from the grub menu it goes directly to a blinking purple screen. What should I try in order to get this thing working?
