Official Amazon AMI for Ubuntu?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 30, 2011
I'm hoping to set up an Amazon EC2 compute instance running the latest Ubuntu. Does anyone know how I can find an "official" one, perhaps published directly by canonical?
This company professes to publish "official" ones but I have no way to confirm that:
Triple boot help with latest Ubuntu distro on Apple Mac book Pro with Bootcamp.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 30, 2011
I am using Bootcamp with a dual boot function with Mac OSX Snow Leopard and Windows 7. I now want to introduce a 30gb partition for the latest Ubuntu Distro.
I really want to be careful to ensure I dont break anything as it works perfectly at the moment. I have used Rfix and Bootpicker to manage the dual boot processes as well as using the option key in Bootcamp to boot into each OS.
Does anyone have any advice how I could create a new partiton for me to use for Linux. I want to make a 30gb partion.
Any step by step instructions would be fantastic. I really want to improve my Linux skills and want to run it natively rather than thru a virtual machine using VMware or Parallels.
UDev rule, NTFS3G and FUSE
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 20, 2010
I am trying to configure my home ubuntu install so that I can plug and unplug my USB hard drive, whilst Samba will always share it properly across the network with full rw access. I think I've nearly got it setup, but am failing at the last hurdle, hoping some guru here can crack the problem.
Accomplishing either of these tasks on their own is OK. I can mount the drive using fstab, and sharing works fine across the network, until I unplug and plug back in the drive, which is where I need to manually umount it, and sudo mount -a to get it remounted, or if I remove the fstab entries, ubuntu will mount and umount it when it's unplugged and plugged in, but not with the right privileges (700 , so noone except the logged in user has any rights to it).
I have followed the guide here to setup the udev rule: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=16822, but I believe this guide was written back before ntfs-3g and fuse were updated to make it/them more secure regarding non-root m
Would it be possible for an official gaming edition of Ubuntu?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 1, 2009
Would it be possible to have game publishers and nvidia or ATI endorse a steam like client for ubuntu? or have an official distribution with this client built in?
There are projects like playdeb but the selection of games are limited
Would a steam like client based on the new software manager where it's possible to buy games from the publishers be possible? Or to make it easier for publishers have an official gaming edition of ubuntu that they can develop and test for. The client should be open source and be ported to other linux distros too.
Coloring book for Kids on Linux
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 11, 2009
Does anyone know any Coloring book software for Linux? I just wanna know if there is any kind of application like that, where kids can color some pictures by choosing the color and clicking on it, you know? Maybe mixing the colors all together too...
Of course there are some for Windows, but I wanna replace that, so my daughter can use it on Ubuntu.
Recommendations for good admin reference book?
location: linux.com - date: June 30, 2011
I am hunting around for a good desktop reference guide to Linux administration. I can of course use the Internet and man pages, but sometimes I prefer to have a reference book. There are a lot of books out there, but I thought you might have a favorite you'd like to recommend. I want something that's basic but detailed and has useful practical examples that explain common Linux system programs and utilities. My main interest is in managing and optimizing my own personal computer (mainly file system and memory management, not networking). Examples would be how, why, and when best to use programs such as top (htop), ps, vmstat, dstat, grep, bash, vi, apt, etc for analyzing, monitoring and tweaking. I am also very interested in kernel optimization and compiling. Great if I can buy it for less than $30 or so. I will be using Ubuntu and/or Debian on my new laptop which has an i7 quad processor and an SSD drive., if that makes any difference, as well as an old junkie laptop for experimenta
Ubuntu Dapper BETA to Official Dapper?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 25, 2006
I can't seem to find much about this subject around, but how easy is it to upgrade from Dapper 6.06 BETA to the official Dapper release when it's out?
I'm on Hoary at the moment, will be updating to Breezy tonight (seems to be required to move to Dapper) and then on to Dapper. Should I move to Dapper BETA (I'm impatient ) and then on to Final, or should I just wait until the Final release?
Many thanks in advance,
NEWS: Ubuntu & Audible Book Format
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 15, 2009
So I just though I would share this, maybe create some buzz. I just got off the phone with Audible customer service, having to cancel my membership after learning I can't use Audible on Linux. As it turns out, talking to my customer service agent, Audible IS working on bringing the goods to the table for all of us Linux users after all....and the best part, they got their eyes on Ubuntu. HELL YEAH! WOOO!
