ubuntu desktop w/ lamp server install vs ubuntu server w/ lamp server install
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 28, 2014
I want to setup a ubuntu 13.10 server with lamp package, but i'm wondering if it's better to build it from a ubuntu 13.10 desktop installation or a ubuntu 13.10 server installation?
So, I have a few questions:
Other than no GUI and a stripped down OS, is a ubuntu desktop server functionally the same to unbuntu server? Is the installation of ubuntu desktop w/ lamp package install as stable as installing a ubuntu server w/ lamp package install?
I'm only asking because i like working with GUI rather than CLI. I guess that purists would say start with ubuntu server OS.
desktop install configuration vs server install?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 29, 2013
I have Ubuntu running on my main machine and I originally made the mistake of choosing the "desktop installation" when I put 12.04 on it, and I should have chosen the "server" version.
I run the machine as a gateway machine with a modem, serving the LAN with DNS, DHCP, firewall etc and so I get conflicts when I upgrade. The upgrade I just ran to Raring Ringtail has foobarred something (in another post) and what I want to do is ensure that the install process next time doesn't think that it's installing a desktop. I want it to stick to package upgrades only and not add de-installed packages back into my mix.
So my question is, where is the config that tells the system that this is a desktop config? And can I change that to 'server'?
Desktop vs Server install
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 9, 2015
I'm just curious what the differences are between the two different distributions.
I know the installers have different options and one has a gui, and I know that one installs a desktop GUI but other than that, what are the differences?
I should also note my goal is to setup Ubuntu with openbox and I'd like to just install what is needed because I'm a bit OCD about installing stuff on my system that isn't needed. So I'm thinking I'll do the server install, setup my crypto disks etc and then just not install any server stuff to it, install the GUI and then yeh.
Netbook vs Desktop install, what are the differences?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 21, 2010
Yea so I'm wondering what the actual differences are between the different versions?
Is it simply in the interface or does netbook have different services running by default, different hardware detection or anything else that makes the system run any differently?
I know netbook doesn't have compiz installed by default but is the rest of the package set the same?
I ask because I have been having various problems with boot and audio along with a few other niggles.
I was running the desktop edition through the betas and the RC with no problems at all but I installed lucid final from a netbook edition iso and have done two more fresh installs from netbook iso and seem to be having a lot more issues.
Netbook VS desktop install?

I have been installing the desktop version of Ubuntu, never tried the netbook version.
My computer is a netbook, Dell Mini 9.
The desktop works fine except QDVDAuthor and Openshot seem "too big" for my screen. When I try to click a button the program display jumps. That aint right.
Everything else is fine, so if I install the Ubuntu netbook version, could this solve the qdvdauthor and openshot problem?
I have the Dell external CD drive, any reason I cant install netbook from a CD, not the recommended flash drive?
Im guessing they have you using a flash drive cuz netbooks dont normally have a CD bay?

Server vs. Desktop for Home server use?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 25, 2010
I prefer to use GUI admin tools instead of command line for most management function. I know that you can install the LAMP server stack on Ubuntu Desktop. I also know that Ubuntu Server doesn't enable X11 so everything is command line.
So I'm wondering what are the advantages of running Ubuntu Server versus Ubuntu Desktop with the server packages installed?
Sorry for the dumb question, but I figure I'm missing some key point that everyone else already knows about Server and ease of management.
