Ubuntu on a USB stick Live vs Full Install
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 11, 2010
I was able to make a live USB stick of Ubuntu 10.04 using Ubuntu's built-in tool. But I learned the hard way that updating Ubuntu then results in an unbootable stick. I've read in these forums about users who have performed full installs on USB sticks, but when I run the installer from the Live CD, I don't see the option to install on a USB stick. Yes, I had the 8GB stick plugged in while running the installer from a CD, but all I saw as install locations were the /dev/sd<n> (hard drive) partitions.
Setting aside the debate on how soon the flash memory will wear off, here's what I'm wondering - assuming I can find out how to do a full install onto the USB stick.
Does a full install makes your USB stick un-portable? Can you still plug the same stick on your desktop and laptop PC's and run Ubuntu on either, or is the installation tied to the hardware where you first run from the USB stick?
Category Matching regex vs full text search
location: linuxexchange.com - date: January 1, 1970
I have a fairly large category table with 1500 categories (some singular words others containing multiple) in it and I'm looking for the best way to match new products to these categories by their title.
I've been looking at using regex and looping through the product description for key words but this wouldn't be very efficient when trying to add over one thousand products at a time, I've also been looking at full text search (FREETEXT and contains) but FreeText search seems to bring back alot of results as its matching any and all words in a product description.
Has anyone done something similar in terms of trying to automate which category a product is by its description and can offer some advice or pointers?

Is HVM or PV better for performance and overall stability in xen?
full disk encryption vs home folder encryption
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 20, 2010
I'm getting a new laptop in a week or so and wondering which way to go as far as encryption. The two options seem to be full disk via the alternate and/or home disk.
I'm looking to secure my personal data without interfering with performance as much as I can. I'm leaning toward the home folder encryption, but I was wondering if I'd be missing a major benefit by not going with full disk.
Any opinions on this?
What are most laptop users going with?
Linux full shutdown vs. manual shutdown?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 19, 2004
I have RedHat 9 isntalled on two computers.
On one computer, when I shutdown it goes through the normal shutdown procedure and ends at the message, "Power Down." I then have to manually turn off my computer.
On the other computer, when I shutdown it automatically powers down itself without me having to manually hit the power switch.
So my question is why are some computers able to fully shutdown and other not? It is something in the bios, the motherboard, etc? How can I find out if the first computer supports automatic power downs?

Ubuntu 12.10 Cinnamon vs Mint 14 Cinnamon
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 1, 2013
I'm switching from a Mac to Linux and am still in doubt as to which flavour I'm going to be using.
Ubuntu seemed like the obvious choice but after trying out several distros (many of which Ubuntu based) I decided that Mint Cinnamon was going to be it.
Until I found out you can install the Cinnamon desktop on ubuntu. Which I tried.
Hmm. It looks equally nice as it does on Mint but still, I've got the impression it runs just that tiny bit better on Mint (i.e. more fluid - and I tend to ditch something at the first sign of even the slightest hint of 'jerkyness').
Ubuntu would seem like the logical step when coming from a Mac : it's the most popular distro out there and the Unity interface in some ways is very similar to OS X. But, I have to say, I 'dislike' Unity with a passion (not going to use the word 'hate', seems a bit too strong - it was OK I guess in 12.04, terribly slow in 12.10). Mint Cinnamon touched me right away (although I'm currently trying out OpenSuse 12.3 KDE and I must
