RHEL 5.5 on Oracle Linux Download iptables telnet, ftp et al
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 7, 2011
Maybe Newbie now haven't played around on Unix for years but 30 years as a User and not a career I want.
I am rebuilding machines at home using some old systems now a RHEL5 and NT Server 4 Pack 6a Enterprise, 2000 Pro and another rebuilt with Windows 98 and I use an Internet (Wi-fi) Router but on Cat 5 mainly linked to an other Router both using NATS and a hub below the second Router but 2 machines on that LAN Segment have dual Network Boards using DHCP on the sub-net router and Gateway on the Internet Router and they do with exception of the RHEL5 have the Internet Access and before I rebuilt the RHEL5 with Oracle VM so did this machine Internet Access.
Question: The 2000 pro and the RHEL 5.5 are on the same subset LAN but to play safe (NATS protects) I modified the Router access permissions. Modified the Iptables for Telnet. pgrep telnet - no. /etc/xinetd.d/telnet - No.
I do appreciate the lack of security on Telnet but 2 machines on the same hub with 2 routers both using NATS
Should I give Oracle Linux or Mandriva a shot potentially?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 23, 2012
Hi there guys! I found out that Oracle Linux is free, 'cause I wasn't sure if whether or not it was for a while, due to having to pay for Oracle's other OS, Solaris, if you wanna obtain it, and I'm just wondering if it would be a good idea to at least test it to see if it's a good option for either home or enterprise use, same with Mandriva.
I already know of Ubuntu's home and enterprise potential because the ability to build up from a minimal install is a really powerful asset, especially in enterprise/educational environments, but also in home/personal environments.
Virtual Oracle Linux with Oracle tools on Ubuntu host to IPsec remote database
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 22, 2012
Hello Ubuntu friends,
I need to use Oracle developer tools on my notebook that is running ubuntu 11.10.
Because Oracle tools are not installable under ubuntu without any problems theres is an idea to run Oracle Linux under some virtual partition under ubuntu.
Have you any idea and reccomentdation how to approach to this problem?
With tools I need to connect to remote database over vpn line or IPsec line.
So Oracle SQL*Net protocol should go from oracle linux partition than over host to the internet connection
( VPN or IPsec ).
do not have any experience with ubuntu possibilities for virtualization.
There is also Oracle solution for virtualization Virtual Box , but I am not sure if this is working under ubuntu and if I would gain any advance according to ubuntu partitioning software?
Thank you for any direction, experience and help.
It is the long time goal to set up this architecture so that I can use stable architecture
for work as for home use. So deeply apreciating any hi
Oracle Linux: aggressive
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 16, 2012
I just noticed the existence of oracle linux. Quite some things caught my attention, mainly the aggressive style. Traditional players in the gnu-linux scene, as Novell or RedHat, are directly attacked. I think this kind of advertisement is forbidden in my country (at least once was). Some links:
RedHat mentioned a hundred of times per page here.
Explicit mention to Suse here. Seems that Dell migrated from Suse to Oracle linux.
Apparently, Oracle makes a lot of contributions to linux, including leadership (modesty?, why?). Does anyone remember the great contribution of donating OOo to Apache?
Well, sorry for the sarcasm. I simply don't like the style of these guys. If anyone has anything to contribute/clarify/say, please share.
Need help with driver installation of Ralink rt5390 wireless on Oracle Linux
location: linux.com - date: October 20, 2011
The last time I looked at Linux was pre 2004. A friend set me up a Linux that booted from a 3 1/2 inch floppy and we did distributed computing work units on overclocked motherboards. I was impressed. I'd like to get back into Linux since it has had time to mature.
I tried VM and had no success. So I am finally able to get Oracle Linux to work on a dual boot configuration.
I can't read ntfs when I'm in Oracle Linux and a thumb drive with ntfs can't be read either. How do I format a thumb drive that will work to transfer back and forth from Linux to Windows 7? So I can tell you the screen info that will allow you to help me. At present I have the driver from Ralink rt5390 2011_0406_RT5390_RT5392_Linux_STA_V126.96.36.199_DPO_GPL.bz2 its compressed and I can transfer it to DVD to import to Linux or get a thumb drive working. I'm on an HP dv7-6157CL and I only have wireless from sprint to work with.
Thanks a bunch,
Oracle linux 6.1 freezes on ESXi 4.0
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 15, 2011
My Oracle Linux vm freezes on ESXi 4.0 server. THe ssh connections are terminated at the same time. When I switch to console I see the last screenshot that does not respond, so I have to power off/on the vm to bring it back on line. I checked the /var/log/messages but could not find anything releated to the reason why it happens. Where else can I look? The guest is not in power safe mode. VM ware tools are not installed on the guest.
[SOLVED] how to find version of Oracle Linux

How do I find the Linux version? I am running Oracle Linux.

Currently we are using RH Linux. We are considering going to Oracle Linux as they seem to be cheaper and are based on the RH Linux.
The cost of their Satellite Server function alone in much less. RH is like $13000.
I am not overly pleased with RH support and response times to our issues. They always want to downgrade our issues and take for ever to get back to us. not to mention they dont answer all the questions.
I find most of my solutions in google before they ever get back to us.
Oracle support model seems to be better too.
I have several questions:
1. What do people feel about Oracle Linux ? good / bad any technical concerns etc.
2. How is Oracle support?
3. Pricing seem to be a lot less than RH is there any catch to that?
4. Any thoughts on Oracle VM? vs VMWare vm (we use VmWare here heavily. Oracle will not support DB on it.
5. their version of satellite server is different and we would have to rewrite a a bunch of stuff. but I hear it can support RH s

is there any linux command to download files from any ftp site remotely
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 29, 2003
I recently came to know of the command wget used for remotely downloading data ie even when the user is logged off.But i could see that it did'nt work for sites. The same links when provided in the internet browser was successful & file started downloading. It also worked in Linux Download managers like Prozilla but not in wget.Though the anonymous user logs in successfully the download does not start or sometimes the error like
"No such file or directory"
too appears. Please provide a solution to this problem.
