LXer: Red Hat's Ceylon will get up Oracle's nose
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 8, 2013
Published at LXer:
As the Linux market gets crowded with more and more players, the control of standards becomes important; that's how one gains marketshare and outwits rivals. That is the only reason that one could possibly assign for Red Hat releasing a language called Ceylon to compete with Java. Ceylon was first called a Java killer when news of its being planned was leaked via presentation slides but that description was quickly toned down; after all, nobody wants to poke a stick in the hornets' nest that is Oracle, not openly anyway.
[SOLVED] I broke grub on multi boot box and can't get up.
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 31, 2008
I have 3 installs of Hardy. One that we use, one to play with and learn on, and one on an external to see if I could get it to work.
The whole deal worked great for about 2 days and then I did something, I have no idea what, that made it so I can't boot to any of them.
I get error 17 cannot mount.
I can access all my installs through the live CD and my 2 backup partitions.
This is one line that is common to all of my fstab files:
UUID=966762ae-7027-4f45-9724-ba2965cfa642 / ext2 relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1
This does not look good to me.
What do I have to do to repair Grub so that I can use my box?

How often does /tmp get cleaned up?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 28, 2006
I was wondering how often the /tmp folder gets cleaned up.
I am interested in finding this out for older versions of Linux before tmpfs. For example Red Hat 7.3 - Red Hat 9.
I was under the impression that files / folders older than 10 days get removed. Does anyone know when the /tmp is scanned for things older than 10 days?
I plan to buy a new laptop and install Linux mint. How do I get started?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 16, 2013
I plan to buy a new laptop and install Linux mint. How do I get started and how do I choose which laptop to buy? What is the best way to put Linux on a laptop that already has windows on it. (I have been told that all laptops in the uk have windows already installed. Is this true?) I would like a computer that runs well but do not need masses of space.
Can't get a network interface to show up in Backtrack 5 R3
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 8, 2013
first of all I'd like to say I'm a newbie to Linux. I've used it for some time but never really got around at troubleshooting problems.
So I've installed Backtrack 5 R3 onto my hard disk and I'm using it side-by-side with my Windows 7. However, I can't seem to get an internet connection-most people say that this is because I didn't activate the networking. Yes, I have activated the networking by using the start networking command, however the only output I get is something like: "stop networking/waiting". There are no wireless connections in wicd and I can't get connect to the Internet using an ethernet cable either. In fact, Backtrack doesn't detect those internet flags like "wlan0" and "eth0" at all. Since I'm new to Backtrack and Linux completely, I didn't know what information should I put here in order to get help. The "iwconfig" command reported:
lo - no wireless extensions
the "ifconfig" command reported informatio
How do I get rid of a messed up LVM Hard Drive
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 17, 2014
I am Running ProxMox Ver 3.1 which runs on a minimal Debian Linux.
I wanted to add an other Hard drive to allow for backups. So onto the web and start reading, following the instructions, BUT I think somewhere between morning tea and the midnight snack, I goofed, I think on a couple of my back tracks I made a mess.
The drive I added is 1 TB SATA. but looking at trying to mount the LVM folder, which I thought was the whole drive, I either get access to 10GB or 100GB. When I try to delete, and start again It comes back and says I cannot remove the LVM because it is mounted, and when I try to unmount it says does not recognise the path.
I know I can just blow the whole lot away, including ProxMox and start again, but I would love to know what I have done.
SSH when i press up i get ' ^[[A ' rather then bash history
- date: January 11, 2011
i have a question, i just got a new ubuntu server 8.04 upgraded to 10.04 box. when i SSH into [email protected]
it's the ssh im used to. However when i ssh into a different user that i created, it's slightly different. when i press "up" i get "^[[A" rather then the last bash command executed. also it doesn't keep my "current" directory in the cursor. And i get an error when using "screen". It's probably just a permissions thing, but i cant figure out where the problem is
