My frustrations, issues with linux lately, please help me.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 4, 2007
I'm a pretty novice linux user, longtime windows user. I've used Suse, Red Hat, Fedora, Centos on and off for a couple years but not extensively what so ever. I primarily don't use linux, but I got a idea to run a dedicated server for computer game hosting. So I bought two slightly used dual AMD 1.7Ghz Opertons on a Tyan server Motherboard with a gig of RAM. I installed centos 4(32 bit) about a week or two ago, it ran fine for a couple days, and one day I booted it up I got some "gdm user not found in /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf" error, or something similar to that. So i ran a live cd of centos, and copied over the orginal gdm.conf from the cd to the hard drive and that didn't fix it, So i decided to just wipe the Hard drive, a couple month old Sata 36.7GB 10k RPM WD Raptor, and installed fedora 6 (64 bit). It ran for maybe a week and then one day I rebooted it after having a friend ssh into it to check my ftp configuration in vftpd cause I was having ftp issues, and my compute
Audio/Skipping Issues With .MOV Files
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 1, 2008
Hi, I have several questions to ask, please bare with me.
I don't know much about media stuff, but I have here a .mov file that's 85mb. When I play it with Xine it works but no audio. And also, whenever I want to skip to a certain point in the video by clicking the streaming bar, the video automatically skips back to the beginning. Is there an explanation for this?
I am able to play .avi, .wmv, and the likes with no problems. The video and audio is perfect on those types of files with Xine.
Anyway I thought this was a codec issue and so I checked over at /usr/lib/codecs/ and their were no codecs present. I thought by installing mplayer codecs in /usr/lib/codecs and make Xine use those codecs it would fix this audio and skipping issue, but it didn't. Forgot to mention that before I did that I uncommented out a line in .xine config file which was this:
VMWare Fusion 4 (OSX Lion) Any issues with the following Linux guests?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 6, 2011
I have recently switched to a Macbook Pro from being a Slackware user and would like to invest in VMWare Fusion 4 to run various Linux (and occasional BSD) distributions for my university work.
I will largely be interested in running:
Fedora 16 (on Tuesday)
Besides Fedora which is not yet released, does anyone have any experience with the VMWare tools being installed on these distributions?
Issues with UPNP
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 6, 2007
I'm trying to get UPNP running on my Clarkconnect (RHEL/CentOS based) server.
I have installed the upnp server on my server and it is up and running. However, when using apps like uTorrent, they cannot connect to the upnp server and have the correct ports opened up.
What I noticed, however, is that while the system is booting, as soon as it starts up upnp, my windows PC right next to it picks up that there is a new device on the network, and recognizes everything as it should. Once the server finishes loading, it loses the connection to the upnp server.
Does anybody have any ideas what could be causing this and how the fix it?
issues with configuring ethernet/wifi and ext monitor on eeepc (1005HA)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 11, 2009
have just installed latest linux mint onto an eeepc (1005HA) and are having a few problems getting ethernet/wifi nad an ext monnitor to run correctly. Previous to this i ran from a USB stick which ran perfectly on my old asus laptop but had same probs on the eeepc but decided to install anyway just in case that made a difference which it didnt.
Some info: lspci indicates that the network controller is an Atheros Communications AR9285 wireless Network adapter. The ethernet controller is an Attansic tech device 1062. The current kernel is 2.6.28-11-generic.
I initially had issues getting the right resolution for the eeepc screen but copying the xorg.conf file from the old laptop seemed to sort that out as well as the external monitor problem but it still sees only one monitor in display sttings - shouldnt it have two.
The problem with WIFI and ethernet is more annoying, bassically i dont seem to have the devices eth0 or eth1 according to ifconfig - i have lo and something
issues with DLink DNS323 NAS permissions
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 11, 2012
I have a DLink DNS-323 NAS external drive enclosure and I'm trying to get it to connect with my Ubuntu 12.04 system. I've been trying various suggestions here and on the web without complete success. Initially, I had the freshly installed system working or so I thought. I then tried to transfer downloaded TV shows to this drive as a backup. The Nautilus on my Ubuntu system reported a permissions issue when it was creating the folder for the files to be copied to.
My fstab file has the following entry:
//192.168.1.129/Volume_1 /NAS cifs guest,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0
The DNS-323 is setup to allow all users read-write access. I can see the contents of the drive including contents of subfolders. I can create folders, but cannot copy files to it from any of my internal drives. Nautilus reports that I don't have permissions.
Does anybody have any suggestions?
Issues with 8.04
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 26, 2008
I have just downloaded and installed 8.04. Easy install. I have been using Linspire since 12 2003 but Ubuntu is being advertised as the best so far.
I have been trying for the past hour to solve three issues.
First issue, I could not see any way to have the mouse single click option.
Second issue. The screen display is too large. Some of the windows in System are very large and I cannot see the whole windows, i.e., cannot see some buttons. I am using a Dell 17 inch monitor. I could not get the monitor to adjust to the desired display and the System instructions did nothing. I think I have 640 x 480 right now.
Third issue. How can I get Firefox 2.0? Flashblocker 1.5.5 will not work in Firefox 3.0. I tried to download 2.0 from Mozilla and CNR.com but no joy.
Is there am easier way to get something like the Control Panel in Freespire?
Videorelated issues with old Nvidia quadro
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 15, 2014
Hi, this is my first post! :-)
I've tried, as I seem to do every year or so, to get started with Linux, and I've always had problems that made me give up. This time I'm putting in more effort as I really want to get it working.
I have an old dell with an nvidia quadro NVS 280 SD video card. I have tried Ubuntu and Debian (with gnome desktop), and both have been unusable for video-card-related reasons.
Ubuntu was displaying menus and other graphic elements like windows, etc. at about 2 frames per second (quite literally). When I tried to update drivers other problems ensued, so I decided to try Debian, which is still currently installed on the machine.
However, Debian is missing characters and graphic elements all over the desktop, to the extent that it's unusable.
I'd be grateful if anyone could suggest how to get up and running with a version of Linux that I can use with this machine - even if it doesn't have a graphic interface, or has a really stripped down one - or h

Printing issues with Linux Mint Debian XFCE (201104)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 19, 2011
I'm booting into Linux Mint Debian XFCE from a USB thumbdrive and am really pleased with the performance. Only problem is that I can't print. Linux recognizes my HP Laser Jet P1005 and confirms that it's installed. Except that it won't print. I'm wondering if finding and copying the correct HP driver onto the thumbdrive would work or is some installation process needed? I had the same problem with Linux Mint 9 and never found a solution that someone with average computer skills like myself could apply. I'd like to be able to print from the thumbdrive without a full system installation.
