Video Issues with ATI Radeon4350 and Crunchbang Linux 9.04
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 8, 2010
I did a fresh install of crunchbang linux, both 32 and 64 bit and get the same result. I have a strange video issue, see the pic. The desktop is the correct size coming out at 1080 or 720p to my Sony 60" TV via a DVI to HDMI cable. The desktop is the right size but all text on the screen is around 8-10" tall. If I open a terminal I can barely type since only a few words will fit on the screen. It is truly strange.
All I did after a fresh install is load this driver package:
sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
aticonfig --initial - prior to this the screen was scrambled after reboot.
I have also tried (on a different fresh install) to load the downloaded ATI 10.2 package, the 9.4 and the 9.8 package and they all result in the same issue. I think I need to modify the xorg.conf or some other settings but am not sure where to begin. Can anyone please offer some insight into how to get this to work correctly?
I was using an Nvidia card before but it has
Microphone issues with Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 under Jaunty
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 19, 2009
Hey everyone, I have tried googling this issue for hours and searching the forums, and the irc channels with to no avail. I'm hoping someone here can help me...
I cant seem to get my Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 microphone working. I bought this because I heard that it worked great with Linux.
When I open up Volume Control in gnome, it shows up as muted, and when I click to un-mute it, as soon as I close the window or change to a different device and change back, it is muted again. When i try to open the device in Audacity it says that it is unable to open the device. And why i try to record a sound using gnome sound-recorder I get nothing but silence. I tried Alsa-mixer to no avail. I am truly stuck at this point. If anyone could help me resolve this issue, I would be most grateful.
Issues with chmod, SUID, and GUID

Not sure if this should be posted elsewhere. Also, I apologize in advance if this question has been answered. I promise I couldn't find it.
chmod u+s and g+s aren't working
My friend and I are studying for the LPI 101-102 using the free book found off of
The book is supposed to be the 2005 edition (new enough, one would think), and has exercises in it.
As part of this exercise we:
1) made a user (via the terminal) whom I affectionately named "chump1"
2) set a password for that user
3) make a group "sales"
4) add the user to the group
5) make a directory "/news" owned by "sales"
6) Set the GID to "/news"
7) As root set SUID root xeyes. Login as a non root user. Check that this binary runs with UI root.

I am getting a new 4kb sector HDD for my laptop, WD scorpio black 750gb, I would like to image existing partitions on 512bytes sector HDD and move them to the new 4kb sector HDD, what's the best way to do this.
present config is as follows:

I am planning to keep the same three partitions as the primary partitions on the new drive and add few more logical partitions. I would have liked to move
Raid issues with the last kernel upgrade from 3.2.29 to 3.2.45 on Slackware 14.0
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 5, 2013
Been a long time since I've asked a question here.
The last kernel release for Slackware hosed my Raid installation. Basically, I had to roll back. 3.2.45 seems to be recognizing my disk as md127 and md126 when the kernel is loading.
A little info on my system...
Raid 1 on the boot partition, /dev/md0 on a logical volume /dev/vg1/boot
md version 0.90
Raid 10 on the rest /dev/md1, /dev/vg2/root, /dev/vg2/swap, /dev/vg2/home
md version 1.2
I'm using the generic kernel. After the upgrade, mkinitrd, and lilo reinstall I get this message:
Security issues with Parallel Desktop running linux on a Mac
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 28, 2008
I am running Linux Mandriva 2008.1 in Parallel Desktop (VM) on a Mac Host. There is no possibilities for me to have a shared folder so I am using FTP to transfer my downloads from my VM Mandriva to my Host Mac OS 10.5.2. I am actually using VNC on Mandriva and I let my MAC take over. My main concern is that when I use VNC my VM running Mandriva is by default made available on the network at my work. I don't want anyone accessing my stuff or even remotely seeing anything on it. I have put a login and password to access that FTP server but still is there anyways I could make that VM invisible on the network? As well, what type of firewall I could be using to protect that VM? I know there are plenty out there but the difficulties is that I am using NAT on a shared network with my host.
Thank you for your help,
[SOLVED] Permission issues with lighttpd user on debian what am I missing?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 23, 2012
I have a strange permissionproblem with my scannerserver
I found a tiny i386 compatible computer that i want to set up as a scanner-server.
Therefore I have installed the sane backend on it.
As i want people to be able to scan over the web, I have installed the lighttpd webserver along with php5 (with FastCgi module enabled).
On this I run phpSANE, which basically is a webfrontend that creates the argumentstring for sanes scanimage command.
the problem is this:
normally only root can access scanner devices, but this is worked around using udev, which is the recommended way.
As a result, my users can now scan if i add them to the "scanners" group
This includes the lighttpd user, which i have verified can scan from the commandline just as everyone else.
I can, however not scan from within the lighttpd-webserver/php/phpSane without specifically giving alle permissions to usb with chmod -R 777 /dev/bus/usb/002/002
Then it scans just fine.
As the lighttpd user

Intermittent wired connectivity issues with Intel 82579V
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 4, 2013
If I shutdown my computer, I'm plagued with interrmittent connectivity issues. A few restarts and it goes away for a while. I had 5 days of great connectivity, shutdown last night, now it seems to stall on every third of fourth page load. Full dmesg is attached. There are a few errors associated with attempting to mount a NAS device, but it usually just resolves itself (not sure if this is a chicken or egg problem). I think I've included everything relevant below - but if there's something else, let me know!
Appreciate your support here. It's a particularly frustrating issue, given that wired connections have always been nothing but fantastic for me in the past.
If I load a live usb, internet works as expectedIf enable and disable the connection, it works well for a short time.

Minecraft issues with Java/OpenGL/ATI
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 8, 2012
So i recently moved to Ubuntu 12.04 and its really great however ive been having some problems with some games on Ubuntu, in this case it was minecraft, now originally it wasnt working due to java not working properly, then i followed the installer found here to get java working:
After this, minecraft was loading fine and i could successfully get into singleplayer and multiplayer games, however all of my textures were mucked up, like my arms were not there and my player skin was a culmination of block skins and stuff like that. I then deleted the .minecraft folder and re-downloaded the game and it worked perfectly.
I started to notice that i would get FPS lag in the game where usually when i was on windows i was fine. So i looked into my gfx card drivers, and they are ****** up. So i uninstalled all of the proprietary drivers and tried running minecraft without the propreitary drivers installed and now once i login, i hit a
